Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Mt. Hood picked up a lovely blanket of snow over the last 24 hours – 10” fell at 5000′. With the wind relatively light during that system, it’s evenly distributed; be cautious if you’re thinking of hiking for turns. We’re just going to pick up a few more inches of snow this week before the weather turns rather dry for the next week or two. At least it won’t be raining or particularly warm!

Monday kicks off foggy and adds a little bit of snow before turning clear in the evening and maybe adding a few flurries. The snow level near Mt. Hood will be 1000′ this morning, 2500′ this afternoon, and 1000′ or so overnight. About 0.1” to 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for 1-2” new powder. Up to another inch of new snow is possible in the evening. Wind: SW 15-20 in the morning, SW 10-20 in the afternoon and evening, and SE 15 overnight.

Easterlies build on Tuesday and kick off some easterly orographic snowfall; the wind may be strong enough to redistribute some of the snow already on the ground. We’re only expecting a trace of new snow during the day followed by clear sky overnight – there just won’t be much moisture around. The snow level will be 0-1000′ in the morning, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 0′ under clear sky overnight. Wind: SE 15 in the morning rising to E 25 (more at T-line) in the afternoon and NE 15-20 overnight.

Wednesday looks clear and sunny in the morning with some high clouds possible in the afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. Wind: NE 15-20 in the morning, WNW 10 in the afternoon, and NW 15 overnight. After that, we’re likely looking at an extended stretch of cool, dry weather. That’s better than the Pineapple Express, but it’s not going to get us making turns…

Gorge Wind Forecast

We’ve definitely moved into winter now – over the next week, a cold pool will establish in the Columbia Basin. High pressure out there will turn the wind offshore and keep it there for a while. If you are up for chilly easterlies, you’ll get some big days on the river. If you’re seeking westerlies, it’ll be a good long while!

Let’s look at Monday. The day starts light and variable west of The Dalles with westerlies at 10-13 out east. The wind turns light easterly, less than 10mph, by the afternoon. River flow readings are 103-141kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 43F. Tuesday starts with E 20-25 near Rooster. The wind quickly builds to 30-35 at Rooster and 15-20 at Cascade Locks and Viento. Evening wind rises to 40-45 at Rooster and fades overnight. High temp: 40F. Wednesday starts very cold with easterlies at 10-15mph in the usual places. The wind turns light easterly midday and may turn light westerly late afternoon. High temp: 43F.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Here is a new event: “Unwind from your day with a calming mindfulness experience along the Indian Creek Trail. Each session will include walking meditation, gratitude practice, and connection with others. Emily, your guide, will facilitate individual and group experiences through a practice known as “forest bathing” or “shinrin yoku.” Please come prepared for uneven terrain although there is no significant elevation change. The total distance walked will be between one and two miles. Please be prepared for rain and darkness. An umbrella and lantern/flashlight are recommended. We will meet at the entrance to the trail near the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road in Hood River, Oregon. Open to ages 9+ Suggested donation $10-20 per session. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.”

Cycling

Too much rain. Too wet to ride. This will be followed by freeze-thaw conditions. Best riding will be on gravel roads or on pavement. Please don’t ride muddy trails – you’ll damage them, and someone will have to come after you and fix them. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
