Mt. Hood Forecast

The weather this morning is nothing short of “extreme” on Mt. Hood. A gust to 89mph was recorded at the top of Mt. Hood Express chair at Meadows. Near-zero visibility is the rule all across 35 and 26. What will happen today? Well, the wind will back off and more snow will fall. We’ll see periods of sun on Saturday and Sunday, and then we’ll likely have a couple days of full sunshine on the slopes.

Looking closer at Friday, we see nothing at all because ti’s a full-on blizzard. The foot of snow that fell over the last 24 hours is likely sculpted into windslab and sastrugi in anywhere exposed to the wind. Trees are likely down, and there’s likely tree little scattered across the snow. Exciting! The wind will back off today, allowing lifts to run. Today’s snow level will be about 1500-2000′ early and will fall to 1000-1500′ after midnight, but the snow will likely be done by then. We’ll see about 1.0” water equivalent (WE) snow by this afternoon, for about 10” of new. Another 0.4” WE is forecast tonight, for another 4-5”. Wind: W 60 before dawn, NW 45-50 through early afternoon, NW 35-40 afternoon and overnight.

Light orographic snowfall continues through mid-morning Sunday before the sky clears. New clouds move in after sunset. The snow level will be about 1000′ in the morning. It rises to 2500′ in the afternoon. About 0.1” WE is forecast during the day, for just an inch of snow. The weather remains dry after noon. Wind: NW 35-40 in the morning, NW 20-25 in the afternoon. Same overnight.

Sunday starts with a trace of snowfall and then turns clear in the afternoon. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning and will rise to 6000′ under sunny sky in the afternoon. Wind: NW 20-25 through midday, light and variable in the afternoon, S 5-15 overnight.

Monday and Tuesday look clear and sunny and dry. Some models suggest a 4 day dry period, so we may see a break from the storminess both in the lowlands and on the slopes. If you’re going up today, do be quite cautious, and do wait to see if lifts are going to be able to run. Have a good day!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s going to be another westerly day here in the Gorge as offshore high pressure sits at an astounding 1048mb. Expect a gusty, rainy start with max wind at (as always) Viento. By mid-morning, westerlies pick up to gusty 30-35 from Mosier to Arlington with gusty 20-30 west of Mosier. The wind backs off to 27-31 this afternoon in the eastern Gorge. River flow is 99,600cfs, river temp is 39F, and predicted high temp is 45F. If you’re going out, please wear all your safety gear and keep your partner in sight. Saturday starts with W 13-16 through the whole Gorge. We’ll probably see a bump to 18-22 from Mosier to Avery in t he afternoon, at which point the eastern Gorge drops to 10-3. High temp: 46F. Sunday starts with light westerlies and turns calm and sunny. High temp: 50.

Cycling

We are in winter riding season, and the trails are apt to be fragile. If it was below freezing last night and is above freezing now, don’t ride. If it was below freezing last night and it is sunny now, don’t ride unless you are under a tree canopy for the entire ride. Freeze-thaw conditions, when ridden upon, result in permanent trail damage. Please consider doing something else, perhaps riding a gravel road in the trees or going to the mountain. Thank you!
