Mt. Hood Forecast

It’s a cloudy start to Friday, and a bit of drizzle is not out of the question after noon. Saturday looks partly cloudy, or perhaps clear, and we’re back to full sunshine on Sunday. Next week, models show a more progressive pattern, but that will mostly be out of the NW and therefore not too wet. There’s a sign of a stronger, wetter system next Friday, but that’s far from certain a whole week out.

Looking at Friday: it’s cloudy now, and it’ll drizzle from midday on with clear sky after midnight. The snow level will be 11,000′ in the morning and will slowly fall to 8000′ after midnight. We’re only expecting less than .10” rain. Wind: W 20 in the morning, WSW 15-20 midday, W 25 in the afternoon, and NW 20-30 after midnight.

Saturday looks clear in the morning. Little fluffy clouds may pop up midday followed by clear sky overnight. The freezing level falls from 8000′ in the morning to 6500′ in the afternoon to 3000′ after midnight. Wind: NW 20-25 in the morning, NW 25-30 in the afternoon, and NW 15-25 after midnight.

Sunday will be sunny. The freezing level will be 3000′ in the morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ overnight, when some high clouds may move in. Sunday should bring excellent corn snow following that hard snap in the morning. With Meadows done for the season, you’ll need to head to Timberline. Hiking will probably not be allowed at Meadows on Sunday due to an employee function.

If we look at next week, we see cooler weather except on Wednesday, when it’ll be sunny and warm. There’s a chance of precip on Monday night and on Friday. This weekend is the last of the daily snow forecasts for the season; wind will be the highlight from now on through the summer, unless something special pops up in the mountain forecast.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Despite the assistance of gradients (.07 & .07), there’s not much wind on the river to start the day. Depending on where you look, you’ll find 0-13 or so. An approaching weak cold front nudges the wind speeds upward midday; you’ll find gusty 15-19 from Stevenson to Arlington by late morning. Afternoon wind drops to gusty 10-13 in the west (where drizzle is possible) and rises to gusty 22-26 from Lyle to Rufus with 10-13 to the east. River flow is 178kcfs, river temp is 52F, and high temp forecast is 68F.

Saturday sees a slightly stronger wind forecast, but the shortwave driving this increase will also keep it gusty and not-so-reliable. Expect morning westerlies at 14-17 from Viento to Mosier with 7-10 east and west of there. By late morning, we should see 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus. Models suggest gusty 25-29 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon with Arlington joining after 5pm. High temp: 64F. Sunday starts with the after-effects of Saturday’s shortwave: 9-13 from Stevenson to Arlington. Afternoon wind drops off east of The Dalles. From Stevenson to The Dalles, you’ll find 21-24. High temp: 64.
