Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Still not much happening in the wind forecast… Friday starts light and variable. We could see a period of westerlies at 14-17mph between The Dalles and Rufus early to mid afternoon. Other than that… light wind. River flow readings are 66-96kcfs, river temp is 60.8F, and high temp forecast is 58F.

Saturday brings light and variable wind that may turn very light westerly. High temp: 61F. Sunday starts with light westerlies. Afternoon wind picks up to 10-13 west of The Dalles and gusty 15-18 east of The Dalles. High temp: 58F. Not much hope of usable wind, either direction, for the next week.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Yesterday’s sunshine warmed up the snow on the slopes, and now we’ll have a crust. Best chance for redemption of that snowpack for some turns is corn snow, perhaps on Sunday? Let’s just say that ski conditions look less than ideal due to rain and warm temps until Tuesday, and even then: iffy! Don’t worry – it’s early. It’s gonna happen!

So, Friday. Warm, cloudy, and eventually drizzly. The snow level starts at 10,000′ and falls to 6500′ by the afternoon. Overnight: 6000′ or so. About 0.15” rain is forecast by 5pm. Another 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight. That’ll probably be a cold, thick, slushy rain at 5000′, but up high, a couple inches of snow will fall. Wind: WSW 20-30 all day and WSW 15-20 overnight.

Saturday starts clear and sunny way up high with clouds below 6000′. This transitions to clear sky above 4000′ midday and then high clouds overnight. The snow level will be 6000′ to start the day and will slowly rise to 10,000′. A trace of rain could fall in the morning, but mostly the day will be dry. Wind: W 25-30 curing the day becoming WSW 35-45 overnight. Monday brings a very wet, but also very speedy frontal system through. This one will have a tap into copious moisture thanks to an atmospheric river. The snow level will be 9000′ in the morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ after midnight. About 1.5” rain is forecast Monday daytime. About 0.7” WE falls as snow overnight for 6-8” new. Wind: W45-50 in the morning, WNW 35-40 in the afternoon, W 35 in the evening, and W 20 overnight. I make it sound like that’s all certain. It’s actually not – there’s quite a bit of model spread on precip amounts with this system, so take it with a grain of salt for now.

Looking deeper into the week, 850mb temps stay below 0C through Thursday morning, but there won’t be much moisture around. Generally speaking, the weather looks likely to become too warm for snow by Thursday afternoon. Stay tuned…

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cloudy skies stay that way and may pick up some drizzle late morning. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and upper 50’s later. Light westerlies. 18% chance of rainbows. Saturday will be cloudy with drizzle in the morning. Temps start in the mid 40’s and rise near 60. Light and variable wind. 57% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks high overcast with rain overnight. Temps start in the mid 40’s and climb to the upper 50’s. Light westerlies. 3% chance of rainbows.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Teacup has a work party Saturday (29). HRATS have a work party at Family Man scheduled for Saturday (29). Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

Head out to the trails for some brown pow today! Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. Hood River County has reopened all motorized trails to motorized use. Hospital Hill, Underwood, and Whoopdee have reopened. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
