Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
A little snow Thursday night gives way to an unsettled Friday and a sunny, sunny, weekend with the freezing level below 6000′. Warmer, still-sunny weather and spring conditions are set for Monday and probably Tuesday. After that, we dive right back into cold-enough weather, but moisture looks limited for now. Maybe that’ll change?
Expect an inch or two of snow Thursday night with the snow level falling to 2500-3000′ by Friday morning under partly cloudy sky. Some mid-level clouds and some high clouds stick around for much of the day. Sunbreaks are likely. The free air freezing level will be 2500′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. Wind: WSW 10-15 early, ENE 10 in the afternoon, and E 20-25 after midnight.
Saturday looks clear as can be. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 4000′ in the morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and back down to 4000′ overnight. Wind: E 20-25 in the morning, NW 10-15 in the afternoon, and light northerly overnight. Expect hardpack conditions in the morning with a chance of sticky snow in the afternoon.
Sunday will have a few high clouds in the morning and sunshine later. The FAF will be 4000′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 9000′ after midnight. Conditions: hardpack becoming sticky later. Wax warm. Wind: light northerly early, light NW in the afternoon, and N 20+ overnight. Warmer, sunny weather is forecast on Monday and Tuesday with strong northerlies possible Monday and lesser wind Tuesday. after that: back to colder weather with a few inches of snow forecast for Wednesday. Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Not much happens on Friday and Saturday, but models are warming up to the idea of just-enough west wind on Sunday and a much windier day (and 70 degrees!) on Monday. Tuesday’s the slacker of the next four, and Wednesday looks like a big day on the river. You’ll find strong wind in the western Gorge early and a big day in the desert in the afternoon. The heat won’t stick around for your desert session, but you’ll be working hard enough to stay warm!
Friday starts with E 5-10 at Stevenson and Iwash (Rooster), rises to E 15 for a couple hours mid-morning, and drops back to E 10. Elsewhere: light. Not much happening, right? River flow Thursday was 113-162kcfs, river temp is 47.12F, and high temp forecast is 59F. Saturday starts with E 15-20 at Iwash and E 10 at Stevenson (originally auto-corrected to “Steepness”) By early afternoon, Iwash turns westerly and Stevenson goes calm. Later: W 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell. High temp: 63F. Sunday looks like 16-19 or so from Stevenson to Avery.
Extended forecast: Monday: 25-28 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Tuesday: 12-15? But that’s been bouncing around, so don’t trust it. Wednesday’s forecast have consistently depicted a cold front coming in from the NW with a 10-20 degree temp drop from Tuesday. With a 15-20 degree temp spread possible between the metro area and the desert along with strong offshore high pressure, the eastern Gorge is the place to be. That said, models do hint at a solid hatch session in the morning. This is looking like a good day, if you have the skills, buddies, and safety gear, to do a big downwinder. Paddlers: remember that you do need a PFD and a whistle. Or at least some sort of noisemaker. Sorry… inside joke. But you do need that gear! See you out there!

Saturday will be partly high overcast then clear. Temps start in the mid 30s and rise to the low 60s. Light easterlies early. Calm midday. Light westerlies in the evening. No rainbows. Sunday will be sunny. Temps start in the upper 30s and rise to the mid 60s. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Indian Bowl and Roll (the baby sis to Amayah’s) opens April 5th in Hood Rivert. The White Salmon – Bingen community-wide yard sale is April 19th and 20th. On April 16th at 6pm, Master Gardener Denis Carlson gives a talk at the Hood River Library on controlling rodents in your garden.
Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
It’s pretty wet out there after a couple days of rain. Best chance for Friday is Syncline. Maybe wait until Sunday before attempting other trails – they’ll be wet from the Wednesday/Thursday rain. Sisterwives and Kleeway in Post Canyon are currently closed for rebuilding. Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing (or sunny) when you go to ride; freeze-thaw trails are susceptible to permanent damage. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
