Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

A very progressive weather pattern over the next week brings frontal systems, high pressure well offshore, and a trough along the coast. Translate that to English, and you have gusty westerly wind. Friday’s bringing a strong cold front. Pressures started at 30.02/29.91/29.82 for gradients of 0.11 and 0.09. Normally we’d be seeing strong wind with that, but the wind is scattered about at all elevations of the atmosphere. Winds are generally in the 17-20 range. Get it right now if you want it. Rain arrives midday and drops the wind to the 11-14 range or less west of The Dalles. You may find a period of 22-25 east of Rufus for a few hours midday before there too becomes rainy late afternoon. River flow readings are 61-90kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 60F. Saturday starts with W 13-16mph all the way from Stevenson to Threemile. With partly cloudy sky in the western Gorge, the best wind will shift east. Expect 13-16ish west of Mosier. From Mosier to Boardman, the wind will build to 24-27mph or so, with a chance of more, from late morning or early afternoon on. High temp: just 53F. Sunday should be sunny. The wind, however, won’t be great. The day starts with 7-10 and sub-40F temps in the western Gorge. East of The Dalles: 15-18mph. Afternoon wind falls to 10-13mph or less. Models start to diverge after Sunday, so we’ll leave it here!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

With colder temps and plenty of precip forecast for this weekend into next week, it’s worth a snow forecast! Friday starts out cloudy on the slopes, turns rainy, and then turns snowy late in the evening. The snow level will be 12,000′ early, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 3500-4000′ after 11pm or so. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) falls by 5pm as rain. About 1.0” WE falls tonight. Most of that will be rain or mixed precip at 5000′, but 2-3” new is possible at 5000′ with up to a foot above 7000′. Wind: NW 40 to start, WNW 20-25 midday, W 10 in the evening, and NW 25-35 after midnight.

Saturday brings light orographic (terrain-enhanced) snow flurries. The snow level will be 3500-4000′ all day and all night. About 0.15” WE is forecast during the day for 1-2” snow at 5000′. Just a trace is in the cards overnight. Wind NW 25-35 early, WNW 25-30 in the afternoon, and NW 10-15 overnight.

Sunday looks clear and sunny. The free air freeing level will be 3500′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, and will work it’s way upward after midnight into Monday morning. No precip. Wind: NW 10-15 all day becoming SW 15-20 overnight. Significant rain is forecast Monday into Tuesday afternoon, when the rain should switch back to snow. Significant model disagreement exists at this point, so the forecast for early next week could change significantly. Either way… say hello to winter! The mountains will look great with a fresh coat of snow!

Hood River Weather Forecast

Mostly clear sky early adds high clouds, then sunshine again, then high clouds. Smoke may increase dramatically this afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and low 70’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Friday will be cloudy to start then rainy, then very rainy. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 50’s later. Moderate westerlies early. Light in the afternoon. 5% chance of rainbows. Saturday will be partly to mostly cloudy, mostly dry, with a few sprinkles possible. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and low 50’s later. Light west wind early. Moderate to strong in the afternoon. 58% chance of rainbows.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The annual Winter Weather Conference is Saturday morning at OMSI. Teacup has a work party scheduled for Saturday morning. Stay tuned for possible changes to that due to weather. Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint and Post n’ Pinot are done for the season due to darkness. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

It’s dusty out there, but it won’t be dusty much longer! Hood River County has reopened all motorized trails to motorized use. Hospital Hill, Underwood, and Whoopdee have reopened. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding.

The road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. In theory, the Courtney Road closure was to end October 15th. Lemme know if you know if it has reopened. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
