Gorge Wind Forecast

It really is beautiful out there even if it isn’t all that windy. Yet. We’ll start the day with light wind west of Viento, 15-20 from Viento to Swell, and 10-13 east of Swell. A shortwave/low thing approaches from the north today, bumping up the wind in the Gorge. By noon or so, we should have gusty 21-26 from Stevenson to Rufus. The most pleasing wind will likely be at Stevenson, the Wunderbar, and perhaps Avery. Other locations may be impacted by directional issues or gustiness issues. River flow is down to 180kcfs. Temp is 61 degrees.

Saturday sees the entire Northwest under the influence of a low pressure system with atmospheric instability. It’s definitely a tricky forecast, especially with a 1028mb low offshore… that’ll probably bump the wind a bit higher than the GFS is predicting. Let’s start things off with 17-20 everywhere and hold that speed through noon. If you want it, get it before the afternoon, because destabilization makes the wind impossible to predict after noon. One thing’s likely: the wind will die off to nothing east of The Dalles as the day goes on.

The vast majority of Sunday will be calm, although we’ll probably see some light easterlies in the afternoon. This is good, because Big Winds is offering free standup paddle rentals to dads from 11am to 4pm on Sunday at their Event Site shack. I mean building. Palace. Then you could go buy a paddleboard, which judging by the stickers on them when I was there yesterday, seem to be on sale.

BONUS: Jones Friday: 16-19. Saturday: 13-16. Sunday: 7-10. Sauvie’s Friday: 12-15. Saturday: 15-18. Sunday: 10-13+. Coast (north/central/south). Friday: 15-20/25-30/30+, W swell 4′ at 9 seconds. Saturday: 10-15/20-25/30+, NW 6′ @ 8. Sunday: 10-16/15-20/20-25+, W 7′ @ 15.

Road and Mountain Biking

Only thing new to report is that one person attempted Gunsight last week. It took this person 1:48, which is pretty long, but apparently it is passable (no details on trees or snow – definitely an adventure ride). Saturday is the White Salmon Backyard Half, so don’t go biking on Hospital Hill until the afternoon. The front side, remember, is closed due to logging. That includes Millennium. Trailkeepers has work parties on Wygant Peak Saturday and Sunday (that is open to bikes). 12 Hours of Post and the Matt Lap are Saturday. The Gorge Ride from the Discovery Center is Saturday. There’s a work party on Borderline Saturday morning.

Upcoming Events

It’s Friday, and that means if you’re up early, you can get a free cup of coffee and a donut for jogging or walking four miles from Kickstand Coffee at 7am. Free coffee and donuts are available tomorrow at the Nichols Basin bus stop from 9 to 10:30. You can also go for a ride on the big pink trolley.

Other events tomorrow include a trail work party on Post Canyon’s 133 starting at 9, the A-Town Throwdown windsports event, the Gorge Ride from the Discovery Center, and the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon. The grand opening of Hood River’s Golden Eagle Park is tomorrow from 3 to 7. Dads paddle SUP free at the Big Winds shack at the Event Site on Sunday, 11-4.
