Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies have decided to stick around all the way through the weekend, as have reasonable temps hanging around near 80 degrees. Solidify your plans and come down for some wind sports! Models suggest we’ll lose the wind on Tuesday (when it’s 90-something) and perhaps get it back on Wednesday (when it’s still 90-something). Let’s dive in to the deets!

Friday kicks off with pressures of 30.11/30.02/29.98 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.04. Westerlies in the teens start the day as far east as Rufus, but you’ll want to stay close to the Corridor for best results. By late morning, we should have 19-22 from Stevenson to Mosier. Afternoon wind seems likely to shift a bit – you’ll find 15-18 from Stevenson to Hood River with 18-21 from Mosier to Doug’s. River flow yesterday was 200-263kcfs, river temp is 60F, and high temp forecast is 76F. Perfectly pleasant!

Saturday starts off similarly: 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier. The wind adds a few mph, climbing to 18-21 for your midday session. Desert heating helps out late in the afternoon for a 21-24, Stevenson to Doug’s, finish to the day. High temp: 80F.

Models like the idea of a strong dawn patrol and quick fade Sunday followed by a more moderate burst in the evening. Call that Dawn Patrol, prior to 9am, 24-27 from Stevenson or Viento to Hood River. It quickly fades to 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River by mid-morning. Go ride your bike or something. Then hold off until later afternoon, and you’ll have 22-25mph thermals from Stevenson to Doug’s with 10-13 east to Arlington. High temp: 81F. The current forecast for Monday is 17-20 in the Corridor with nothing anywhere else. Tuesday currently looks not windy and 90+ degrees. Wednesday: hot with wind unlikely but not ruled out. Let’s leave it there for today. Have a great day!

Cycling

Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear per my friend who rode them on 5/27. Bottle Prairie, 8 Mile, and Super Connector are open. Super Duper Connector is open. There is still snow on a short section of Surveyor’s between the Cooks Meadow intersection and Dog River. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. Falls Creek isn’t even close! Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: with cool weather in the forecast for at least a few days, it’s a great time to get more seeds in the ground. It’s also a great time to plant. Plants like cool weather. But maybe wait until after today’s windstorm, because plants don’t like nuking westerlies any more than you do! Those of you planting sweet potatoes (yes, you can grown them in the lowlands here) will want to plant those slips like you plant tomatoes – deep. Bury them up to their last set of leaves. They’ll make lots of roots, and lots of roots make for healthy plants that make lots of sweet potatoes. Happy gardening.
