Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! One last windy day is on tap before we take a rest day from wind sports on Saturday. Moderate westerlies return on Sunday. Beyond that, with the official start of fall, we officially drop into a fall pattern: some west wind, some east wind, and generally low predictability for the extended forecast.

Today, however, will be predictably windy. Marine clouds pushed past Hood River to start the day. The clouds combined with pressures of 30.10/29.98/29.93 for gradients of 0.12/0.05 to start the day. While the wind was hovering around 30 mph near Rufus to start, it’s unlikely to stay that strong; clouds will burn back, and the focus will shift to areas west of The Dalles. If you want wind from dawn patrol all the way to sunset, try the Rowena section of the river. Lyle to Doug’s starts at 24-27, falls to 20-23, and holds. Viento, driven to a frenzy by all these clouds, starts at 27-30. It falls to 20-23 and holds. Between the Hatch and Mosier, the day starts with 20-23 (less in Hood River), perhaps bumps up 2-3mph briefly as the clouds burn back, and then drops to 20-23 and holds. Stevenson starts at 15-18 and rises to 20-23. In other words, everywhere from Stevenson to Doug’s should eventually level out at 20-23ish. Periods of slightly stronger wind are totally possible (early near Rowena and Viento, mid to late morning from Swell to Mosier). River flow over the last 24 hours was 58-89kcfs, river temp is 67.28F, and high temp forecast is 68F for Hood River and 73F out in the desert.
Saturday looks calm to start and calm to finish. In the middle of the day, a brief period of easterlies at 10-15mph is likely between Stevenson and Viento. Iwash (Rooster) Rock is opting out of the east wind as are areas east of Viento. High temp: 76F for Hood River.

On Sunday, a weak weather system is forecast for the afternoon. This will be just enough of a kick to take the wind from a calm start to a windsport finish. The day starts dead calm all through the Gorge. Westerlies slowly, slowly build. By 2pm, we should have 14-17 from Stevenson to Mosier. Later in the afternoon, westerlies rise to gusty 19-22 from Stevenson to Rufus. High temp: 77F under partly to mostly high overcast sky.

Extended: Ridging Monday and Tuesday gives us calm wind Monday and easterlies at 20-25 or so on Tuesday. Beyond that, there’s a lot of range in the possibilities. At least some of the ensemble members give us a moderately strong westerly day on Wednesday, but there’s far from complete agreement on it. Beyond that: too much uncertainty to make a call. Cycling
All vehicles on HR County forest roads need a gallon of water and a shovel. Check the Hood River County Foresty/Trails website for current Post Canyon area closures. Fire or fire danger closures: Whoopdee, Underwood, Hospital Hill, most of Post Canyon, Gorge 400, trails around Mt. Adams. Dog River is closed for logging and rerouting until mid-September. Open: 44 Road Trails, Ape Canyon, Lewis River, Falls Creek, Columbia Hills, Gunsight, Boulder Lakes, Siouxon, Sandy Ridge. Twin Tunnels reopened for a day or two, and then it closed again – I have photo evidence to prove this! Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
