SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! One last day of west wind is in the Gorge wind forecast before we tumble into a heat wave. Along with the heat, moderate easterlies are forecast Saturday and Sunday. Models like the idea of west wind potentially returning late in the day on Monday with a big west wind day on Tuesday. Fingers crossed โ we often linger in the heat a day longer than initially forecast.
That said, both the GFS deterministic and the Euro ensemble peg Tuesday as a windy cooldown day despite the lack of forecast marine clouds in the metro area. Beyond that, there’s uncertainty in the models, but most of the Euro ensemble predicts solid westerlies each day after Tuesday โ that said, it really depends on where high pressure ends up. Hold off on any solid planning for a day or two more until we have more info.
Friday started off with clear sky across the region and pressures of 30.12/30.02/30.01 with 1026mb offshore. Early wind was 16-19mph between Viento and Hood River with 7-10mph at Stevenson and the Rowena zone with light/variable wind east of The Dalles. Models suggest 17-20mph pretty much all day between Viento and Hood River with a late morning lull to 14-17mph possible at the Hatch.
In the afternoon, offshore high pressure strengthens. This gives us a shot at 21-24mph from Stevenson to Doug’s with 17-20mph at the Hatch, which generally does not like it when the metro area is clear. River flow over the last 24 hours was 176-201kcfs, river temp is 61.5F, and high temp forecast is 80F and sunny.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

East wind is in the cards for Saturday. If you want it, get it early. That puts you in a bind: Boards and More has a warehouse sale starting at 8am in Bingen. They have lots of cheap bike and windsport gear from Ion and Duotone. Back to the wind… Early wind will be easterly 20-25mph near Iwash/Rooster Rock with 15-20mph near Stevenson. The wind starts dropping by late morning, giving us 15-20mph at Iwash and 10-15mph at Stevenson and Rooster. At the same time, the wind picks up east of Viento to 10-15mph all the way out to Arlington. Afternoon wind fades to 10-15mph at all locations and eventually drops below 10mph after 5pm. High temp: 87F and sunny.
Sunday looks about 5mph lighter to start with the same pattern of widespread light easterlies midday and light wind in the evening. High temp: 92F and sunny.
A low approaching BC helps the heat low shift eastward on Monday afternoon which gives us a calm start and westerlies of some sort from mid-afternoon on. On Tuesday, offshore high pressure combines with hot weather in the desert for a stronger, mid to upper 20s, west wind day all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. One questionable spot is the Hatch due to lack of marine clouds in Portland. Models look 50-50 on Wednesday and have higher chances of moderately strong to strong west wind from Thursday on. Cross your fingers! See you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

Good morning, neighbors! Hot weather’s on the way, so make the most of today! Temps float higher each day, likely maxing out in the 95-100 range Monday before dipping a bit on Tuesday. Lots of uncertainty is present beyond next Tuesday, but warm weather (not June-uary) looks to persist through the end of the month. No rain is forecast for the next couple of weeks, which is good news for any cherry farmers whose crops survived the last downpours.
Glenwood and our friends around the world this morning
Friday started out with everyone in Glenwood excited that it’s 1) Friday and 2) 40 degrees. Across the rest of the Gorge, folks who have time this morning have windows and doors open to bottle up cold air in preparation for today’s warmth: 80 degrees in Hood River and 85 degrees from The Dalles eastward. I wanted to open my doors, but my cat declined to be put on a leash, so I’m stuck with doors closed. West wind picks up to 15-20mph between Stevenson and Hood River today with 15mph near Mosier and less wind the farther east you go from there. East of The Dalles, the wind may be light enough to turn the Nch’i Wana into a giant reflecting pool, no blue paint and no no-bid contract needed.

Saturday Gorge weather forecast
On Saturday morning, temps fall to the 45-55F range thanks to clear sky and light east wind and dropping humidity. Speaking of… the rather low humidity is what’ll save us in this hot spell. To the west, in the metro area, much higher humidity will result in much warmer morning temps and a more oppressive feel to the heat wave. That’s why they get an Extreme Heat Warning and we don’t. Back to the Gorge… Temps take a big NBA-style jump on Saturday under clear sky: 87F for Hood River and 90ish from The Dalles eastward. Wind will be out of the east at 20-25mph near Iwash (Johnson) Rock and 15mph near Stevenson early in the morning. By late morning, east wind rises to 10-15mph east of Viento and out into the desert and south Wasco County. Evening wind falls below 10mph everywhere.
Extended Gorge weather forecast
Sunday looks nearly the same but about 5 degrees warmer.
More heat is forecast on Monday as high pressure persists over the region. Highs range from 95-100F. Late in the day, it’s possible light west wind will return. If it does, we may lose a few degrees of heat, and we’ll definitely add some percentage of humidity resulting in a sticky finish.
That leaves us quite warm on Tuesday morning. Models suggest high temps will finally start dropping โ the day ends in the upper 80s to the west and mid 90s in the desert. As often happens with the end of a heat wave, strong west wind is forecast. I said this yesterday, and I’ll say it again today: NOW is a good time to get your home prepared for wildfire season because that Tuesday wind will be dangerous in terms of fires. I’ll leave it on that note. Safe travels. -TATAS
