SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Westerlies are lined up for the next six days, at least. Conditions won’t be ideal Friday or Saturday, but it’ll still be windy. On Sunday and Tuesday, and potentially Monday, the setup will be as good as it gets. Break out the small gear! One reminder: the numbers in this forecast reflect readings on the iWind/iKite sensors. Sensors out east (Rufus zone, Arlington zone) read higher than sensors in the west (Hatch, Rowena area). 30mph out east is about the same as 21-24mph at the Hatch/Swell. On to the forecast…
Friday started off cool, cloudy, and post-frontal with another weather system just off the coast and headed this way. Moving pieces โฆ not ideal. Also present: surface-based instability โ this tends to impact wind quality and reliability. Early pressures were 29.81/29.78/29.75 for gradients of 0.03/0.03. Morning wind will be 8-11mph or so all the way from Stevenson to the far eastern Gorge. The approaching weather system keeps cool, cloudy conditions on the west side and allows the desert to lend thermal support this afternoon.
Westerlies eventually, after 2pm, build to gusty 25-28mph from Avery to Arlington. The Rowena area might join in, but it’s likely to be quite gusty and lighter thanks to cloud cover and shower potential. West of Rowena: lighter wind and clouds all day. River flow over the last 24 hours was 137-226kcfs (158-226 at Rufus), river temp is 66.2F, and high temp forecast is 68F for Hood River and 80F in the desert.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

On Saturday, a low pressure system drops right down the coast (bad) and a heat low develops in the WA desert (good). Clouds linger all day on the west side (good). Atmospheric instability will be present (bad). Early wind will be 7-10mph west of Avery and 15-18mph from Avery to Boardman. With that low doing its thing on the west side, the wind will be up and down and unreliable. Expect periods of gusty 24-27mph between Lyle and Rufus early in the afternoon and the same or perhaps a bit less between Lyle and Arlington late in the afternoon. If the low drops far enough south early enough, we could add 5mph after 5pm, but it’s unlikely. In the same vein, an early exit by that low would give us gusty 16-19mph from Stevenson to Mosier late in the day. High temps: 65F in Hood River and 75F in the desert.
Sunday… LOOK OUT! High pressure strengthens offshore, a compact, deep low moves into Idaho, a heat low solidifies in the WA desert, and clouds linger all day on the west side. Westerlies start at 15-18mph from Viento to Mosier (less in cloudy, drizzly Stevenson) with 22-26mph from Lyle to Boardman. Afternoon: gusty 19-22mph from Viento to the Hatch, where clouds will be present, gusty 22-26mph (maybe more) in the partly cloudy Rowena zone, and, wait for it…. 32-37mph from Avery to Threemile with 28-32mph east of Threemile. That officially qualifies as โnukingโ, which makes me happy for many reasons! Westerlies will back off a little after 5pm. High temps: 65F in Hood River and 77F in the desert.
Monday: maybe 5mph less wind, but still very windy, with the potential for the Corridor (Viento to Hood River) to clear enough late in the day to add some close-to-home wind. Tuesday: similarly excellent setup. For the Sunday-Tuesday stretch, the strongest wind will definitely be east/near east โ focus your attention on Rufus, Roosevelt, and Threemile and potentially Rowena. This same decent setup lingers on Wednesday, but an offshore front approaches in the afternoon. This may diminish wind quality. Model agreement lessens for Thursday, but ensembles are mostly in favor of westerlies continuing through the first week of July. Fingers crossed! See you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

Good morning, neighbors! Lined up now: a week of abnormally cool weather for this time of year โ it might even qualify as June-uary! A few showers and potentially a few thundershowers join in through Sunday. After that, very strong west wind is our forecast highlight through Tuesday or Wednesday.
Glenwood and our friends around the world this morning
Overnight into this morning, rain amounts ranged from a third of an inch west of Wyeth to a tenth on the west side of Hood River to a trace in the desert. Thanks to cool air aloft and cloud cover, morning temps were in the 45-55F range. Glenwood: quite warm this morning at 54 degrees. Other exciting news: there’s an actual Winter Storm Watch posted for parts of Idaho this morning, and about 40-50% of the US West is under a Red Flag Warning for extreme fire danger. Here in the Gorge, I’m posting a Gardening Warning for perfect gardening weather (cool, cloudy) for the next 3-5 days. Roads in the Gorge so far today are clear of !CE, but it’s early to determine that we’re safe. Around the world, our friends are having this kind of weather today….
Tehran, Iran: 97, sunny, 12% humidity
Havana, Cuba: 83, sunny, 80% humidity
Muscat, Oman: 92, sunny, 74% humidity
Caracas, Venezuela: 70, cloudy, chance of rain, 87% humidity
Nuuk, Greenland: 39, partly cloudy, 89% humidity
Gaza City: 85, sunny, 63% humidity
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada: 65F, sunny, 67% humidity
Today’s Gorge weather forecast
It’s Friday, all day, for all of us in the Gorge!!! Yay! A weak weather system swings through and nudges a bit of drizzle out of the clouds. We’ll see intermittent light drizzle or sprinkles as far east as Mosier during the day with the same as far east as The Dalles tonight. Today’s wind will be under 15mph to start. It should stay under 15mph west of Mosier, and it’ll pick up to 25-30mph from Mosier to Boardman this afternoon. High temps range form 62F in Cascade Locks to 68F in Hood River to 75F in The Dalles to 80F in Pasco. East of Mosier, the day finishes mostly clear. To the west: clouds linger.
Saturday’s Gorge weather forecast
Saturday morning brings cloudy sky to the west and partly cloudy sky east of Rowena with temps around 50 degrees. Atmospheric instability could fire off some showers at any location at any point in the day. Why? Because cold air aloft: the freezing level starts at 5500′ and rises to 6500′, meaning you might be able to refresh your relationship with snowflakes (not the reactive, defensive kind โ the kind made of water) by heading to Timberline Lodge. Afternoon temps range from 60 (west) to 75 (Pasco). Wind will be 5-10mph west of The Dalles and 15-20mph east of The Dalles early in the day. Afternoon: 15-20mph west of Mosier and 25ish mph from Lyle to Arlington. The wind is likely to increase in the evening and linger overnight.
Extended Gorge weather forecast
Cool, windy weather persists on Sunday. We all start withing a few degrees of 50. Everyone west of Rowena starts with low clouds, and many of you will hold on to those clouds all day. To the east: high clouds that eventually dissipate. Highs range from 60F (Stevenson) to 77F Pasco. Add in offshore high pressure for extreme westerlies: just 15-25mph west of Lyle, but 30-40mph from Lyle to Threemile Canyon and 25-30mph east of there. Any fires that do start will grow explosively despite cool temps and recent light rain. Be very, very careful. This pattern persists Monday and Tuesday. For both those days, Hood River’s high temp is SIX SEVEN degrees with partly cloudy sky.
Looking at the long range forecast (hey, there’s a hawk on a tree 30′ from me!!!), we see cool weather persisting through Thursday with a slight warmup likely after that. Models show high levels of uncertainty. While they do call for โwarmerโ, they’re not indicating โhotโ any time in the next two weeks. It looks like I’d better build some sort of greenhouse for the giant watermelon (W-Andy-Melon) and giant cantaloupe (Ker-Mudge-Melon) that I’m trying to grow. Happy gardening, peeps. Safe travels. -TATAS
