Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. GORGE WIND FORECAST

today's Gorge wind forecast in graphical form
today’s gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Yesterday was quite the day in the Corridor – hopefully you were out there shredding the big swell! As of this morning, the Gorge wind forecast has westerlies Thursday through Saturday. On Sunday, heat across the region shuts the wind down. Uncertainty increases on Monday as heat lingers and a low pressure system potentially destabilizes the atmosphere. Or not. We may see wind on Monday, late, or we may be waiting for a cooldown in the Tuesday/Wednesday time frame. Starting Tuesday(ish), westerlies stick around (probably, but the strength is uncertain) for a week, at least.

Thursday started with pressures of 30.07/30.00/29.96 for gradients of 0.07 and 0.04. The metro area was socked in, and low clouds extended all the way to Rowena to start the day. Models have those clouds burning back to the western Gorge (somewhere) this afternoon. In the meantime… morning wind will be gusty 16-19 from Viento to Hood River with 10-13 near Stevenson and 10-13 east of Hood River to Arlington. Mosier will potentially have stronger wind this morning, perhaps 20-23. Early afternoon wind rises to gusty 20-24 from Viento to Mosier with 23-26 from Lyle to Rowena and 25-28 from Avery to Arlington (remembering that those sensors read high compared to Swell, so the wind will be similar all through the Gorge). When desert heating increases this afternoon, we’ll see 24-27 from Viento to Hood River, 26-29 from Mosier to Avery, and 25-28 from Rufus to Threemile. Stevenson is tricky today – it really depends if the clouds burn off; if they do, expect gusty 20-24. If they don’t, gusty low teens. River flow over the last 24 hours was 116-161kcfs, river temp is 65.1F, and high temp forecast is 71F for Hood River (partly cloudy) and 77F for Arlington (mostly sunny).

EURO ENSEMBLE GORGE WIND FORECAST FOR THE NEXT WEEK

Another cloudy day is forecast for the west side on Friday, and that translates to another windy day for the Gorge. We start light: 7-10 at Stevenson and 12-15 from Viento to Arlington. Clouds look to linger late in the day; at this point, the Stevenson to Hood River zone is forecast to max out at gusty 15-18. Maybe that will change? To the east, we’ll see midday wind of 21-24 from Lyle to Doug’s with 24-27 from Avery to Rufus and 20-23 at Arlington. Afternoon: 15-18 from Stevenson to Hood River, 24-27 from Mosier to Doug’s, and 27-30 from Avery to Arlington. High temp: 74F in Hood River and 80F in Arlington.

We lose the low clouds on Saturday, gain sunshine, and add warmth. The day starts with 10-13mph from Stevenson to Mosier with less than 10mph to the east. Midday wind rises to 19-22 from Stevenson to Hood River and 14-17 between Mosier and Doug’s. Models hint at low 20s late in the day, but that’s questionable given the cloud cover. Moving on to Sunday… hot and not windy, not from any direction at all. Great day to ride a bike or do any other no-wind activity.

Uncertainty increases on Monday. A couple days ago, it looked like cooling might happen on Monday evening. That now looks to be delayed until Tuesday; Monday looks 100 degrees with a chance of westerlies in the teens late in the day. Stronger wind is forecast on Tuesday, but it’s complicated (maybe) by a disruptive low pressure system, mugginess, and thunderstorm potential. That said, we also have a shot at very strong west wind. I cleared my day Tuesday, just in case! Ditto on Wednesday – westerlies are almost certain. While there’s almost ten degrees of spread in the temp forecast all next week (and mostly quite warm – above 80), there’s also good indication of westerlies each day. At this point, it’s the strength that’s in question, not whether we’ll see enough (17-20mph or more) to get folks on the river. Have a great day out there. I’ll see you on the Nch’i Wana!

Gorge weather forecast graphical image - humidity next week

Good morning, neighbors! A couple of nice cool days are on tap, and then we plunge into a heat wave for Canada Day weekend. Heat (80+ degrees is “heat” in my book) sticks around as far out as the extended ECMWF cares to predict (through July 10th). Here’s the most exciting stuff happening in the next week or two: 100 degrees on Monday combined with humidity and a chance of thunder; 80-90 degrees and muggy with a chance of thunder on Tuesday AND strong to very strong westerlies Tuesday and Wednesday.

glenwood this morning and today’s gorge weather forecast

Let’s set all that aside and look at Glenwood. After an anomalously warm start on Wednesday, Glenwood is up to its usual tricks with 45 degrees this morning. The rest of us were much warmer – my place was in the low 60s, but I still woke up cold thanks to sleeping with one of those cooling blankets that taps into winter and draws the excess cold from January. That, by the way, is why winters are steadily getting warmer. Today looks darn cool and lovely, IMHO. Partly cloudy sky sticks around as far east as Mosier all day, and a few mid-level clouds pop up east of Mosier this afternoon. Westerlies rise to 15-20mph near Stevenson, 20-25mph from Viento to Mosier, and 25-30mph from Lyle to the Arlington Triangle. Up in the hills, westerlies will be 15-20mph this morning and 20-25mph this afternoon. High temps make it to the low 70s (west), upper 70s (The Dalles) and mid 80s (watermelon zones out in the desert).

friday’s gorge weather forecast

Friday looks a lot like Thursday: clouds in the west to start with partly high overcast sky out east. After a 50-something degree start, temps rise to 75 (west) to 85 (far east) degrees. Expect rather light wind early: 5-10mph near Stevenson and 10-15mph from Viento to Arlington. Afternoon sees the wind pick up to 15-20mph from Stevenson to Hood River with 25-30mph from Lyle to Arlington.

extended gorge weather forecast

Warmer, sunnier weather returns on Saturday. The sky will be mostly clear everywhere all day. Expect 50-something degrees in the morning. Afternoon: 80 in the west and upper 80s from The Dalles eastward. Sunday will be hot (low 90s everywhere) sunny (with blue sky) and not windy (light/variable everywhere). Even hotter weather – nearly 100 degrees – is forecast on Monday with increasing humidity in the afternoon. That will be, um, not nice. Depending on what happens with a low pressure system, we might or might not see a chance of thunderstorms Monday into Tuesday. I’m keeping a close eye on this – the combo of instability, heat, and high available moisture is a bad combo for cherries and also for powdery mildew growth. Gardeners, beware.

It’ll still be hot on Tuesday. But it won’t be triple digits, thankfully. High temps fall to the 87-95 degree range for The Dalles. Similar uncertainty is present in the high temps all next week – about 10 degrees of range each day. The bottom of that range is 80 degrees each day, so it’s certainty going to be warm, despite the uncertainty. Finding a light wind day for light wind tasks next week will be tricky – models have westerlies at 20mph or more every single day. At least the Boardheads will be happy… safe travels. -TATAS
