Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Hi shredders! The snow just keeps on coming, but don’t you worry. It’s about to stop for a bit and leave us with a week, or nearly a week, of spring conditions. But between now and then, we have about 1.5 to 2.0 feet of new snow on the way.

Sunday night into Monday will be snowy. The snow level falls from 3500′ to 1500′ overnight. About 0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast for 5-7” new snow. Wind will be W 40 (orographic assistance, yo!) overnight and SW 15-30 early Monday morning.

Monday starts clear above 6000′ and cloudy down low. This can occasionally result in freezing drizzle in that cloud layer. Just FYI. Don’t worry – by late morning, the clouds deepen and snowfall increases. Want sun? Early, my friends. The snow level will be 2000′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ to 3000′ overnight. About 0.1” to 0.2” WE is forecast by 5pm for a couple inches of new snow. About 0.6” We is forecast overnight for 6-7” more. Wind will be SW 15-20 in the morning, SW 25-40 in the afternoon, and WSW 35-45 overnight.

Heavy snow continues on Tuesday and backs off in the afternoon. Overnight: flurries then clear sky. The snow level will be 2500-3000′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1000-1500′ under clear sky after midnight. About 0.7” WE falls during the day with orographic assistance. Call it 7-9” new snow. 0.1” falls overnight for just an inch more. Wind: WSW 35-45 prior to dawn, W 40 midday (storm skiing!), W 35 in the afternoon, and NW 20-30 overnight.

Wednesday looks clear in the morning and partially high overcast in the afternoon with clear sky overnight. The free air freezing level will be 1000-1500′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ overnight. Wind: NW 20-30 early, NW 10-15 in the afternoon, and NE 10-15 after midnight. That’s the last cold day for a while. If you want packed powder, get it then.

By Thursday afternoon, temps will be in the mid 30’s under sunny sky. The weather stays sunny and keeps getting warmer through the weekend. Models do hint at colder weather returning for the middle of the following week, but that’s way too far out to predict accurately. In the meantime, enjoy the pow the next couple of days!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Monday starts calm. Easterlies rise to 15 at Cascade Locks and 10ish to the east of Hood River in the afternoon. Rainy. High temp: 47F. River flow Sunday was 77-115kcfs, river temp is 43F. Tuesday starts calm west of The Dalles and 10-13 east of The Dalles to Arlington. The wind slowly builds to 25-29 from Avery to Boardman with 14-17 from Stevenson to Doug’s. There’s still quite a bit of range in the forecast for the eastern Gorge, but at least 40% of the ensemble members have gusts into the 40’s which would give us averages in the upper 20’s. Fingers crossed. High temp: 48F with rain all day at least to Hood River. Wednesday starts with 14-17 from Stevenson to Arlington and settles in at 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 7-10 out east in the afternoon. High temp: 50F with clouds early and sun later.

Extended forecast: the upcoming “heat wave” – temps in the 60’s – lasts through early next week. There are some signs in the models that this will break summer-style: offshore high pressure, cold air rushing in, NW flow, and heat in the desert. If this happens, we’ll see a big west wind day sometime between Monday and Wednesday. Let’s watch this closely!
