Next best chance is Sunday afternoon when we’ll see some westerlies in the desert.

Mountain Weather Forecast

This is the kind of forecast that’s fun to write. =)

Today looks snowy. Tomorrow looks more snowier. Thursday looks snowy too. Friday and Saturday look sunny. Sunday through Tuesday look snowy again.

Stormy conditions today will make for great powder riding. Winds early will be WSW 30-35, switching to WNW 35-45 around 10am. Light snow flurries early will pick up around 10am, becoming moderate through 1am. Total accumulation will be around 1” water value, or 10-13” of snow by 4am tomorrow. Most of that will fall before 10pm. The snow level will be around 500-1000’.

There will be a brief lull in snowfall tonight between 1am and 4am before snowfall picks up again between 4am-7am, filling the pristine parking lots with powder. Moderate snowfall during the day tomorrow brings .75” water value during the day, for 8-10” of light powder, Total snowfall between 4am Wednesday and 4am Thursday will be 1.25” of water value or so, for 12-15” of new snow. Winds tomorrow will be WNW 30-35 early, going to WSW 30-35 around 10am. The snow level starts around 1000’, falling to the surface in the evening and bringing snow to the valleys by Thursday morning.

Thursday looks snowy everywhere, with moderate snowfall through 1pm, then tapering off as high pressure starts to build in. We’ll see about .5” water value between midnight and 1pm, for 6-8” of new snow in the mountains. Winds will be WNW 15-25 early, going to SW 10-15 by 4pm. The snow level will be at the surface.

Friday looks partly cloudy with snow flurries early, ending by noon. Winds will be light and variable on Friday. Saturday looks clear, cold, calm and very busy on the mountain. Snow stats falling again by midday Sunday, giving us powder on Monday and Tuesday. The snow level will remain around 1000’ for this period.

Mountain Weather Forecast

Here we go again with another busy day on the hill. After today, a very cooperative Mother Nature sends us back into a powderlicious midweek cycle, followed by, if the models hold, a sunny Friday and Saturday with more snow after that.

Today starts off partly cloudy with high overcast skies from an offshore low. Most of the precipitation will stay to the west of Mt. Hood, but there’s still a chance of some flurries, especially in the afternoon. Full-on snowfall should start around 11pm. Other than that, today looks mellow. Calm wind this morning increases to W 10 by 4pm and picks up to W 20-25 by 10pm. Models are differing on total precipitation today. One says LT .10” and one says LT .25”. Let’s just call it 1” of new by midnight with 2” possible by 4am Tuesday with the snow level around 1000’.

Tomorrow looks fun if you like storm skiing. The snow level will remain around 1000’, possibly at the surface in the Gorge, with light to moderate snowfall on Mt. Hood all day long. Total precip between 4am Tuesday and 4am Wednesday will be .5”-.75” water value, possibly a bit more if the storm track is just right. Total snowfall will be 7-10”, distributed evenly over the 24 hour period. Winds tomorrow, according to models, will be WNW 30-40 early, building to WNW 40-45 for much of the day, decreasing to WNW 30-40 by 10pm. This could affect lift operations at the ski resorts, and will definitely result in significant wind loading in the backcountry.

Wednesday brings more snow, heaviest between 1am and 10am. Total snowfall will be .5”-.75” of water value for 7-10” more snow. Winds will be WNW 30-35 early, backing off to 25-30 around 10am. The snow level will be around 1000’.

Thursday brings more snow and less wind. Moderate to heavy snowfall occurs for much of the day, for .75”-1” of water value and 9-14” more snow. The snow level will be around 1000’. Winds will be NW 10-20 early, becoming light and variable by 4pm.

Friday and Saturday look dry and sunny. Basically, this looks like an epic week on Mt. Hood. Models suggest we’ll head back into a snowy cycle on Sunday.

My legs hurt already. If you can only pick one day, pick Thursday.
