Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mother Nature was very cooperative with yesterday’s forecast; the mountain received a couple inches of rain followed by 10” of fresh powder. It’s yet to be seen how wind-affected the fresh snow is, but it’s certainly good to see it! We’ll see another round of snowfall on Friday followed by, sadly, several warm atmospheric river events next week (assuming the forecast holds).

For Wednesday, orographic snowfall continues for a couple hours in the morning followed by midday bluebird and afternoon overcast. Snow level 2000′ during the day, rising to 5500′ overnight. Precip: 0.2” water value (WV), for 2-3” of additional snow before the end. Wind: WNW 35 early, W 35 in the afternoon, WSW 25-30 overnight.

Thursday looks partly cloudy or high overcast as the “weather” remains to the north of Mt. Adams. That’s a fine thing given the temps; free air freezing level on Thursday will be 5500′ early and 7000′ in the evening. Wind: WSW 25-30 early, SW 20-25 in the afternoon, and SW 40-45 (much more above tree line) overnight.

Friday looks snowy. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 3000′ when the precip hits, falling to 1000′ overnight after the snow stops. Precip: 0.4” to 0.6” WV during the day, for 4-6” of increasingly fluffy snow. 0.2” WV overnight, for 2-3” of powder. Wind: SW 40-45+ early, WSW 30-35 mid-morning, W 30 in the afternoon, and SW 10 overnight.

Saturday looks dry with the FAF rising to 5000′. Sunday looks rainy – snow level about 6500′. The long range forecast doesn’t look pretty; several atmospheric river / Pineapple Express events are ensconced in the ECMWF.

Friday starts with E 20-25, goes calm by 10am, and turns to W 10-13 by mid-morning.

Road and Mountain Biking

Too wet for mountain biking. Don’t do it, okay? Even if you have a fat bike. You’re damaging delicate trails and undoing the hard work of many, many volunteers. The Power Station has a really wonderful virtual bike setup. I know it’s not the same, but it’s better than damaging the dirt.

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday. There’s community yoga at the Fish Food Bank in Hood River at 10am. Coming up Thursday night, Andrew’s has the movie Journey to the Reef, a big-wave surfing film.
