Good morning,

First off this morning, yet another gentle reminder to support your forecaster in her bid to win a new pair of Icelantic skis and a ride in a Subaru Rally Car. Click through here, scroll over the photo of the happy gal in the red helmet, and click on the green thumbs up. Thank you for the votes (from all your computers and devices), and please share the link with friends and ask them to vote, if you feel comfortable. Thank you so much!

As a reward for your votes, here’s your morning’s entertainment.Talk about being in the wrong/right place at the wrong/right time!

The wind forecast today starts off with light east wind. Late this afternoon, we’ll see the wind switch around to W 10-15 Tomorrow starts with west wind at 21-24 early, east of Hood River. In the afternoon the wind will pick up east of Hood River to 24-28+. Friday brings west wind in the upper teens to low twenties, most likely east of Hood River with gusty, light wind in town.

Your Mt. Hood forecast today contains partly to mostly cloudy skies, maybe a few rain sprinkles, and heavy rain after 8pm. That rain will switch to snow tomorrow morning, but with most of the moisture pre-frontal, we’ll only see a couple inches of snow, at best, at the 5000′ level. Another shot of rain Friday night, with the snow level at 3000′, dropping to 1500′, gives us maybe 3-4” of new snow for some fun fresh tracks on Friday. Saturday morning brings snow flurries, with sun in the afternoon, and Sunday looks warm and sunny on Mt. Hood.

In events, tonight is the kayak shed’s shop paddle. They’ve been running the Lower Hood, but in case you were wondering, there is now a takeout at the former Northwestern Lake. If you’re a beginning boater, make sure you scout it. If you want to go rafting, no worries. Your guide will handle it. The White Salmon is currently at 5′, meaning a rafting trip would be a lot of fun.

Coming up tomorrow night at 6pm it’s the bike documentary Pedal Driven at Springhouse cellars, benefiting your local bike trails and your local 501(c)(3) bike group, the HRATS. Please make sure you attend this film. It’s going to be a good film, for sure, but more importantly, come make a donation to your local bike charity. Tickets are not tax-deductible, but donations are! There will also be great raffle prizes.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday bring free skiing for Firefighters, police, military and medical field personnel at Skibowl. Also those days, the Banff Mountain Film Festival plays at the Skylight Theater. Same films play every day.

This weekend, WTA hosts a work party at 8:30 both days at Syncline and there’s mountain bike racing at the Bear Springs Trap.

Have a great day today!

Good morning,

Thank you to everyone who voted for me yesterday. The rest of you, please vote! Vote early, and vote from all your devices. Think of this as a way to say thank you for the free forecasts! Please go to Grant Myrdal’s website, scroll over the photo of me (red helmet, brown gloves, big smile), and click on the green thumbs up. Do it now, before you read the forecast! You can do it once from each of your web-enabled devices. If you don’t mind sharing via Facebook and other social media, I’d much appreciate it. I really want a brand new pair of Icelantic skis and a ride in a Subaru rally car with a real race car driver! Thank you!

Remember those thunderstorms we were talking about yesterday? They didn’t hit Hood River, but they did hit the desert, with the storm tracker reporting up to 3” diameter hail. WTF?!?! I almost went storm chasing… after all, my totaled car can easily handle a few more dents, and it would make a great story. Next time…

Your Mt. Hood forecast today includes occasional light sprinkles in the morning and the evening with sunshine in between, the freezing level at 11,000′ this morning and 10k this afternoon and SW wind at 20-30. Total precip today, and overnight tonight will be .1-.2”.

Tomorrow starts off with the freezing level at 8000′, rising to 9000′, with on-and-off sprinkles during the day, becoming heavy rain overnight and snow by Thursday morning. Models aren’t really in agreement on precip values, but let’s say .5-.7” rain by Thursday morning.

On Thursday morning, the snow level falls from 6000′ at 5am to 3000′ at 11am, giving us 2-3” of new snow by 5pm. Wind will be SW 30-35 on Thursday. On Friday, the freezing level falls to 1500′. With clear skies possible Thursday night into Friday, we might be looking at a frosty night in Odell and Parkdale.

For those of you who don’t have ski passes, Meadows has $25 tickets this week, Mon-Fri. Coming up Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Skibowl is offering free skiing and tubing to military, fire, police and medical field employees. Family members of those people get half off on tickets too. Sweet.

If you want to play wind sports today, your chance is this morning, when we’ll have 17-21 from Hood River to The Dalles. However, as a low pressure system approaches the coast in the afternoon, the wind will back off. Tomorrow brings east wind at 15-18. Thursday brings a better chance of stronger wind, but it’s a bit early to make a call. At this point, it looks like we’ll have gusty 15-18 near Hood River with 23-26 east of The Dalles.

In outdoor sports events, there’s the Kayak Shed’s shop paddle on Wednesday night, along with the second sailboat race of the spring series at the Hood River Yacht club. For less exercise, come check out the bike documentary Pedal Drive at Springhouse Cellars on Thursday night. This is a fundraiser for the local trails, so all you moto people, horse people, and mountain bikers should be there.

Coming up next weekend, the Bear Springs Trap mountain bike race and a hiking and biking trail work party at Syncline on Saturday and Sunday. This work party is hosted by Washington Trails Association.

Have a great day today!
