9/10 forecast

It’s really starting to feel like fall in the Gorge. The nights are getting colder, and the wind can’t decide which way to blow. On top of that, it’s getting really hard to put out an accurate wind forecast, as you might have noticed yesterday. I notice this every year. I kill the forecast in the summer, and then after Labor Day, I get it right about 2/3 of the time. Frustrating. Anyway, today’s going to be an east wind day, as high pressure builds across the Gorge. I think we’ll see 17-21 in Stevenson by this afternoon.

As the high builds overnight, easterly gradients build too. By tomorrow, east winds pick up into the 23-26 range in the morning in Stevenson and at Rooster Rock. With high temps around 90 tomorrow, we’ll likely see the usual midday east wind fade at Stevenson.

At this point, it’s looking like the east winds will hold through Sunday, for yet another windy weekend.

In other news, the mountain biking is perfect right now. Seriously. Perfect isn’t a word to be used lightly, but it’s absolutely epic on the trails right now. I have perfection reports from Post Canyon and Surveyor’s and Knebal and basically anything on the 44 road.

If you’re looking for something else to do, check out Crossfit at Children’s Park in Hood River. It’s every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 630 am and 530 pm, and it’s free.

Finally, mark you calendar for a Dirty Fingers trail work party this Sunday. Give them a call for more details.

Whatever you do today, have an awesome day!

9/9/9 Forecast

If you missed the west winds yesterday, your sadness will dissipate by afternoon when westerlies return to the Gorge. A front crosses Oregon and Washington around midday, and gradients will build as that happens. This kind of wind tends to be gusty and shortlived, but it’s better than nothing. Steadiest wind today will be at Stevenson, The Hatch, Avery, and, late in the day, at Arlington. Winds should hit the 24-27 range by mid-morning, maybe a little more for short periods.

High pressure builds quickly over the Northwest tonight, turning winds offshore by tomorrow. It’s going to take a little time for the easterlies to build, but by tomorrow afternoon, Stevenson should see 20-23 or so.

Friday looks stronger, with easterlies in the 23-26, maybe a little stronger, seeming a reasonable prediction for Stevenson and Rooster Rock.

It’s worth nothing that it’s going to be in the upper 50s overnight and in the 80s during the day on Thursday and Friday, so these are going to be pretty pleasant and not freezing cold east winds.

In other news, Crossfit Hood River is offering free workouts at Hood River Children’s park on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 6:30 in the morning and 5:30 in the evening in September. Crossfit is used by police academies and special forces units to build strength. You might as well try it to, especially since it’s free. Visit CrossFitHoodRiver.com for more information.

Have a great day today!
