6/27 Gorge wind and events

Good morning,

Columbia Center for the Arts, on June 27th, presents the cycling film Rising from Ashes, a feature length documentary about the first Rwandan National Cycling Team and their six year journey to the Olympic Games in London. It’s not about the bike. It’s about second chances, how our past doesn’t have to define our future, and the triumph of the human spirit over one of the world’s most devastating genocides. The story is told by Forrest Whitaker and follows Team Rwanda. Producer, director and Editor T.C. Johnstone will be on hand to talk about the film. The team’s top rider Adrien Niyonshuti rode in the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic and will be riding in the 2012 Olympic Summer Games. There will be a reception in the lobby at 7:00. with the film beginning at 7:30.

It’s going to be a gorgeous day today, a nice break from the Junuary weather. You can expect sunshine this morning, high clouds this afternoon, a high near 75, and light wind all day long. We have light easterlies this morning, and we’ll probably see light west this afternoon. A big upper low off the coast sends a weather system our way tomorrow, for west wind at 10-15 in the morning and 23-26 in the afternoon. The wind tomorrow will be strongest at Stevenson and gusty everywhere else.

On Friday, we’re back to light wind, and then on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, strong westerlies return to the Gorge.

Coming up this evening, there’s the Post and Pinot women’s mountain bike ride out of Dirty Fingers at 5:30, there’s Families at Family Man, with family-friendly bike riding for kids of all ages, there’s the Kayak Shed’s whitewater shop paddle and sailboat races out of the Hood River Marina. Ladies standup paddle night is tonight this week, due to bad weather last night and a return to summer today. Join Big Winds for free standup paddle demos and lessons at Hood River’s Event Site.

Also tonight, it’s the movie Rising from Ashes at Columbia Center for the Arts at 7:00. This is the bad-ass story of the Rwandan cycling team, headed to the Olympics this summer. You know the awful story of the Rwandan genocide. Come see this inspiring film about Rwandan cyclists.

Coming up this weekend, it’s a big one for organized bike rides, with the Cascade to Crown Ride out of Cascade Locks on Sunday and the Mt. Adams tour out of Trout Lake on Saturday. Also on Saturday, it’s the Splash for Pink on the Descutes River, raising money for breast cancer research by sending you whitewater rafting.

I haven’t mentioned this yet, because… well, because I’m a bum, I guess. Outside Magazine is having a contest to name the best river town. Hood River is in the running. In the weather today, we’ll start off with clouds, but as this upper low moves east, we’re likely going to get hit with a few bands of heavy rain. That’s what I’m hoping, anyway, as I don’t feel like dragging the hose across the parking lot and watering my guerrilla garden this morning. As the low moves east, the wind will pick up: gusty 21-23 near Hood River, and gusty 25-29 east of Mosier, all the way to Arlington. There’s a chance of thunderstorms with this system, and that, along with the rain, is going to make for inconsistent wind.

Tomorrow sees high pressure build over the Gorge, with sunny skies in the morning and high clouds moving in later. Anyone who needs light wind is going to like Wednesday – we’ll see variable 5-10 at most. Westerlies return at 10-15 Thursday morning, picking up into the twenties on Thursday afternoon. Friday looks like, as does Saturday morning, but westerlies return Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

Tonight in town, there’s the Hood River Tri club’s practice at the east end of the Event Site at 6pm. Also tonight, also at the Event Site, weather permitting, free standup paddling for women at the Big Winds Ladies SUPper club.

More importantly, tonight at 4pm is the Hood River County trails meeting. If you want to understand how the trail system is managed, you should be at this meeting. 601 State. Speaking of trails, the dirt is in excellent shape right now, and you should be riding your mountain bike if at all possible.

Tomorrow night’s a busy night. For you families with bikes, it’s Families at Family man at 5:30. Bring the kids up for a family-friendly night of testing the newly built features in our beginner skill park. For you grownup gals, tomorrow night is the Post and Pinot women’s mountain bike ride, leaving Dirty Fingers at 5:30. Also tomorrow, the Kayak Shed’s whitewater shop paddle and the Hood River Yacht Club’s sailboat races.

For you cyclists, and for anyone who just loves a good story, tomorrow night at Columbia Center for the Arts it’s the movie Rising from Ashes, about the Rwandan cycling team, headed to the Olympics this summer. This is one of those not-to-be-missed movies, so make plans to be there. Showtime is 7:30pm.
