Sunday. Get the good snow today. Looks like our awesome snow streak is ending…

It’s mostly clear this morning on Mt. Hood with the very occasional snowflake-containing cloud moving over the top of the volcano, dropping just a few flurries. Expect a mostly clear day today with the free air freezing level at 500′ early and 6000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be light and variable early and S 15 in the afternoon. Mt. Hood Meadows opened Superbowl yesterday, and it is possible you’ll do the same today. Conditions are supposed to be amazing in there, so get it while you can. Beacon, shovel, probe and partner required to hike. Continued after the chart.

Tuesday looks cloudy with some precip moving in midday. The snow level will be 5000′ early, rising to 6000-6500′ when the precip hits, and rising to 8000′ overnight. As of right now, it looks like the bulk of this precip (quite a significant amount, actually) will stay to the west of the mountain. If that doesn’t change, Mt. Hood will see .2-.4” water value between 1pm and 4pm. That will fall as rain. Wind Tuesday will be SW 15-20 early, rising to SW 20-30 after midnight.

As of right now, it looks like a heavier round of precip will move in early Wednesday morning with the snow level at 6500′.

Random Morning Thoughts

In class on Thursday night, my professor was talking about how he holds with care each call or email from a potential new client. For him, these bids for contact are precious – he really understands the process, depth of pain, and complex emotions that lead someone to contact a therapist. I was deeply touched by both his words and the respect and gentleness with which he holds these requests for help.

We all lead busy lives. It can be hard to return calls, texts, emails, or Facebook messages. And sure, there are people whom you may not want to converse with or interact with. Handling those folks is a matter of a different conversation. For the people you do want to maintain a relationship with, it’s important to respond to bids for connection. It may not seem like an unanswered text or email is a big deal, but it may be to the other person. By answering, you solidify your relationship. By ignoring, you undermine it.

Even if a response isn’t important to the other person, your reply, even quickly, will let them know you’re there. By taking the 30 or 60 seconds to respond to another human’s vulnerability in reaching out, you’re encouraging and rewarding vulnerability and connection-seeking behavior. You’re encouraging people to reach to other people, rather than reaching for Facebook, drugs, alcohol, porn, excessive exercise, or any of the other things that people reach for when they feel alone and disconnected.

A text can seem like just a few printed words, and an email can seem like not much more than that, but there’s a lot more going on when we reach out to each other than just the chime of an arriving message. Treat those emails and texts with kindness, care, and respect, and your world will be a better place filled with more human connections. Have an awesome day!
