I’m afraid I don’t have much to offer in good news for the snowpack, but the whitewater boaters will be happy with this forecast. Apparently ’14-’15 is the Year of the Pineapple. And so, given that fact, all we can do is celebrate with pineapple drinks, pineapple food, and pineapples. Continued below the chart…

Today starts off partly cloudy with high clouds above Mt. Hood. Progressively more clouds move in during the day. The free air freezing level will be 11,000′, and wind will be SW 20 early and SW 30-35 in the afternoon and overnight.
Saturday starts off cloudy. If it’s not raining at 5am, it will be by 8am, and the rain will continue all day. The snow level will be 9000′ early, 7000′ after 4pm, and 5500′-6000′ after midnight. In the 5am-5pm period, we’ll see 1.5-2” rain. In the 5pm to 5am Sunday period, we’ll see 1.5-2.0” water value (WV), some of which should fall as wet snow. I don’t think we’ll see much accumulation at 5000′, maybe an inch or two if we’re really, really lucky, but the upper elevations of the ski resorts should see several inches. Wind on Saturday will be SW 40 in the morning, rising to SW 45-50 overnight.
Sunday starts off with either rain or mixed precipitation, probably switching to all rain after 11am, as the snow level rises from 5500′ to 6500′ and stays there. We still may see periods of wet snow during the day. Accumulation at 5000′ is very unlikely. Now for the unclear part – the GFS and Euro are not agreeing on the area of heaviest precip on Sunday. The GFS has us in the bullseye. The Euro has us off to the edge of the atmospheric river. If the GFS is correct, we’ll see 1-1.5” WV by 5pm Sunday and another 1” overnight. If the Euro is correct, we see less. That is all for now on that topic. The wind on Sunday will be SW 40 pretty much all day.
The deluge tapers off Monday morning for showers, rainbows, sunshine and low clouds with the freezing level at 6500′ and rapidly decreasing SW wind.

Gorge Wind
There’s a nice stiff breeze at Rooster this morning. If you hurry, you can catch a morning session before the wind dies. You’ll find 35-40 at RR early with 20-25 at Steven’s Locks. The wind will fade quickly, dropping to E 5-10 this afternoon. Tomorrow starts with light W wind and picks up to gusty and rainy W 13-16 from Steven’s Locks to Doug’s in the afternoon. Sunday starts light and variable and picks up to gusty E 15-18. Expect rainy E 15-18 Monday morning and rainy W 15-18 Monday afternoon.
Random Morning Thoughts
As I was working on the rest of my forecast, I thought of something I really wanted to talk about today. But then, as I fell into thinking about pineapples and rainbows, I lost track of my thought. Bummer. Ah well. It’s a very busy weekend for me, and so I’ll remind you that I won’t be able to put out a forecast on Sunday. I suspect my entire world will collapse without the structure provided by my morning routine, but I’ll survive in the long run, as will you when your routine and maybe even your life gets turned topsy-turvy. Gorge Weather Forecast
We’re starting off partly cloudy, and the clouds will increase as the day goes on. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early (crazy) and in the mid 60’s in the afternoon No rainbows, light east wind. Tomorrow looks cloudy all day with light sprinkles early picking up to heavy rain that gets increasingly heavier as the day goes on. Temps will be around 50 early and in the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Rainbows are unlikely due to cloud cover, but let’s call it 14% in Hood River and 78% in The Dalles. Sunday looks rainy (or maybe not, depending on which model you look at). Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Rainbow chances are up in the air depending on which model forecast wins out. Let’s call it 60%.

Road and Mountain Biking
I went for a little ride in Post yesterday, and Twelve Bridges (the trail below the official start of Seven Streams) was muddy enough that I’d recommend skipping it. High than that, however, it was just a touch slick and not muddy at all. So Post is good. That means Syncline and Nestor are good. Whoopdee? No report. The road biking today will be lovely, with high overcast sky and light east wind. Tomorrow and Sunday will be too rainy for either road or mountain biking.
