You are not going to believe this: we’re going to have some more sunshine on Mt. Hood today. Hooray!!! Mid-winter sun!! Today’s going to start out sunny on Mt. Hood, but you can expect some high clouds this afternoon. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be around 12,000′, temps at 5000′ will max out in the upper 40’s, and the wind will be N 5-10 early and NW 5-10 in the afternoon. Continued below the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′

Today
10,000’+
Tomorrow
12,000’
The day after
11,000’–>6500’

There’s a pretty good chance of some low clouds or maybe some fog tomorrow, with a few high clouds tossed in. Depending on where the low clouds end up, a few sprinkles are possible, although unlikely. There’s not a lot of high-elevation moisture to support precip on the hill. The FAF tomorrow will be 10,000′ or so, and 5000′ temps will end up in the low 40’s in the afternoon. Wind will be SW 15 ealry and W 20 in the afternoon.

Thursday sees the same situation with low clouds combined with some high clouds and not enough mid-level moisture to support precip. The FAF will be 8000′ early and 5000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be NW 20 all day. Expect sunshine for the remainder of the extended period.

Gorge Wind

There’s a mega east gradient this morning, .21 from Portland to The Dalles, and that’ll be enough for 40-50 this morning at Rooster with 30+ at Steven’s Locks. The wind will fade by 25% this afternoon. Expect light wind first thing tomorrow, picking up to west 24-28 from Swell to Maryhill in the afternoon. It should be a lovely day for westerlies. The Columbia today is at 232kcfs, a really good flow rate for the Maryhill section of the river. Expect westerlies at 13-16 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles on Thursday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I spend a lot of time thinking about black-and-white, all-or-nothing thinking. It comes into play in a lot of situations. Say you want to lose 20 pounds. I think most of us have a tendency to imagine how long it will take and how hungry we will be over the whole period. The task feels overwhelming. Or getting in shape for a big event; if you can’t jog a mile, how will you ever be able to run a marathon? I think we humans are big picture thinkers, and it’s really hard to drop that and focus on getting through one week or one day or one minute without having the entire task in the back of our minds. It’s hard to break tasks into their constituent pieces and let go of the rest.

So, back to this self-love thing. We’re all after love, and we all should be after self love. But we’re very complex creatures, and it’s hard to say “I’m gonna love all of that”. So what would happen if you just said, “I’m gonna love the part of me that’s really silly,” or “I’m gonna love the part of me that has the courage to go big on a kite,” or “I love that part that loves to eat an entire pint of ice cream.” Personify that part. Give it an image in your mind that you can like and maybe even love. Maybe make that part a little kid, because they’re pretty damned loveable.

Cuz if you can fully love just one little part of you, you’re a big step down the path of accepting all the other parts. And you are, believe it or not, pretty awesome and loveable. You do cool stuff. You’re silly and fun. And you’re tough as sh*t with a lot of courage – you have to be to do the sports you do. Have a lovely day today. Watch out for that big-picture thinking. =)

Gorge Weather Forecast

There’s plenty sun in the Gorge forecast this week, and even something exciting: clouds! Expect a sunny day today with some high clouds in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and the mid 50’s this afternoon. There will likely be some low clouds tomorrow. It’s unlikely any moisture will fall from them, but a few droplets are possible west of HR. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the mid 50’s in the afternoon. We’ll likely see a mix of mid and high clouds on Thursday with plenty of sunshine in the mix. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the low 50’s in the afternoon. Sunny weather continues after Thursday.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’ve gotten a couple of reports that Whoopdee is muddy. So please don’t ride it or you’ll do lots of damage to Steve’s work. I don’t know what that trail, of all the trails, is staying muddy. But why would you ride there when you could ride perfect tacky dirt top to bottom in Post, great dirt with wildflowers at Syncline, or fields of wildflowers at Columbia Hills. In addition, the road biking is off the charts right now: dry pavement, mostly free of gravel, sunshine, light wind, and roads that shouldn’t be open this time of year waiting patiently for your tires.

Upcoming Events

Coming up tonight, there are 241 pastas at Riverside (that’s actually M-Th), two-fer-Tuesday at Sixth Street, and $12 Prime Rib night at Cebu. Looking ahead to Friday, Helping Hands has the Porkopalyspe, an all-bacon festival featuring dishes by many restaurants. $20 gets you in the door, and all proceeds benefit our local women’s shelter. Friday night is also an HRATS fundraiser at the Lumberyard in Portland.

Have an awesome day today!
