Random Morning Thoughts
I was sitting at my desk this morning having a hard time coming up with something to say for the random thoughts. As I struggled to come up with something profound to share, I struggled with my own thoughts and emotions, which weren’t in a very good place. And of course, what came to mind was a comment on all this struggling. It’s the resistance to the thoughts, emotions, and lack of inspiration that causes the internal battle, and that battle just increases distress. So, I guess that’s my random morning thought. I don’t know how we let go of resistance (to whatever we’re resisting), but therein lies the key to facing our pain head on and dealing with it.

Gorge Wind
It’s windier this morning than the models predicted last night, and that’s a nice thing, because it’s also quite muggy out there and the wind makes the humidity more tolerable: 68 degrees and 79% humidity. With the 6am gradient at .08, we’ll have a cooling breeze at 13-16 from Hood River to Mosier this this morning, probably backing off midday as Portland heats up, but also filling in at Stevenson and the Lyle stretch early afternoon. Later in the day, around 5pm, perhaps, as a weak weather dealio moves through, the wind will pick up to gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to Rufus. But that weather dealio might disrupt our wind field by triggering thunderstorms, so be prepared for up-and-down, gusty conditions.
Tomorrow looks much better in wind land. Near-Classic Gorge Setup conditions give us Dawn Patrol at 23-27 from the Hatch all the way to Doug’s. Expect the wind to climb to 27-31+ from the Hatch to Doug’s by late morning, filling in at Rufus early afternoon, and picking up at Arlington (22-25) late in the afternoon. At some point, Stevenson will join the fun with 22-25.
Thursday starts with 23-26 near Hood River, for a nice pre-therapy therapy session for me, picking up to 25-29 midday and filling in from Stevenson to Rufus by early afternoon. Thursday is the Laser Gorge Blowout, so watch out for little tiny boats with wide-eyed skippers making their way from Cascade Locks to Hood River.
Once again, I’ve remembered to include the coast forecast. Wind speeds are for north/central/south. Today: 20/20-25/30+ with W swell 3’@8 seconds. Tomorrow: 20/25-30/30+ with combined seas NW 7’@8 seconds. Thursday: 15-20/20/25 with combined seas NW 7@9 seconds.

Gorge Weather
Yesterday was a hot one around here, and today will also be a hot one. Expect temps in the mid 60’s early, rising to the low 90’s this afternoon with plenty of humidity to spare. There’s a decent chance of thunderstorms over the Cascades this afternoon, meaning we should see enough cloud development for a pretty sunset. Call it a 78% chance of a colorful sunset and a 1% chance of rainbows, just in case those clouds produce showers. Tomorrow looks cooler and much windier, with temps in the low 60’s early and low 80’s in the afternoon. Thursday starts with temps in the mid 50’s with low 80’s in the afternoon.
Road and Mountain Biking
I rode my bike to Rowena Crest early yesterday morning, and was disappointed that I hadn’t been on the memo list: I saw around 30 people between the Twin Tunnels trail and the road to Rowena Crest, so someone must have sent out a memo. Anyway, I smiled, waved, and nodded to all of them, and all but 3 responded. So, not a bad day.
If you’re riding today, do it early, because temps in the 90’s this afternoon coupled with high humidity are going to make for tough riding later.

River Levels
The White Salmon is at 2.75′. The Klickitat is at 1170cfs. The John Day dam is putting out 200kcfs and The Dalles dam is reading 212kcfs. Columbia river temp is 64 degrees at The Dalles Dam.

Coming up this evening, there’s all sorts of stuff going on. There’s pickup touch rugby tonight at the Hood River Marina at 5:30, there’s triathlon practice at Mayer Park at 6:15, and there’s outdoor music at the Ruins at Springhouse.
Tomorrow is the White Salmon Riverfest and Symposium.
