Good morning!
I think we were all hoping we’d wake up to a clear, sunny day on Mt. Hood, but apparently the weather didn’t feel like agreeing with the forecast. So, east wind orographic snow flurries this morning (at least it’s something different and interesting!), with clearing skies by noon. That’s your new forecast. As I mentioned yesterday, the NE wind is hard to predict. Models show 5-10 this morning, and it’s already gusting to 35 at 7300′. The NE wind will increase during the day today, becoming quite pesky this afternoon. Total snowfall today will be less than 1”. Total snow blown out of Heather Canyon and into Gulch/Arena will be significant.
Tuesday starts off partly cloudy, with maybe some high clouds, becoming cloudy by 1pm with snow starting between 4pm and 7pm. The snow level will be at the surface at 4am, rising to 1000′ by 4pm. We’ll see at least .4-.6” water value (WV) between 4pm Tuesday and 4am Wednesday, for 6-8” of champagne powder. Wind on Tuesday will be W 10-15 early, swinging to SW 20-25 by 10am and SW 35-40 by 4pm.
Wednesday starts off with that 6-8” on the ground and the snow level at 500′. We’ll see an additional .,1-.3” of WV from 4am to 4pm, for another 2-5” of snow. We’ll have another .4-.6” WV between 4pm Wednesday and 4am Thursday, for another 6-8” of the light and fluffy stuff. Wind on Wednesday will be SW 35-40 early, swinging to W 35-40 late in the afternoon and holding overnight.
Thursday starts off with powder on the ground and brings snow flurries with sunbreaks. The snow level will be at 500′. Total accumulation will be less than .3” WV, for 1-3” of new snow. Wind will be WNW 30-35 early, slowly fading to 20-25 by 4pm.
The extended forecast – and remember, it’s a long ways out and subject to change – is not making me happy. Things warm up a little too much for my liking on Friday afternoon/evening, and stay too warm for my liking through midday Sunday. And that’s all I will say about it at this point, because I’m not pleased.
If you’re wondering about the potential for sticking snow in the Gorge, my thoughts are that it’s likely in Odell/Parkdale Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, but that it’s going to be borderline under 500′.
Again, windsurfers and kiters with warmer hands and feet than I have will enjoy a very windy day on the river on Wednesday.
