Good morning!
Today’s my day off from the mountain, and I don’t get many of those, so I slept in. 10.5 hours of sleep. Perhaps I was behind in sleep hours? I woke up to snow falling in the Gorge and happy blue jays gorging at the suet cake outside my window. Blah, blah, blah, get to the ******* forecast, right?
Okay, so obviously it’s going to snow in the Gorge today. More on that later. On the mountain, it’s going to snow until 11am or maybe noon, and then it’s going to dump buckets of rain. It was 24 at 6300′ at 8am, so the warm air hasn’t moved in yet. By 10am, the air will be the same temperature (32°) from 10,000’ to the bottom of the Gorge. That’ll make for wet, icky snow on the mountain, or maybe freezing rain, but by 1pm, the snow level will be at 10,000’. Blech.
So, the official forecast for today, Tuesday: Snow level at 3000’ (except in the Gorge, sorry), rising to 10,000’ by 1pm, dropping to 7500’ by 7pm and falling to 6000’ by midnight. Total snow accumulation will be 3-4” at 5k before the snow switches to rain. Total WV (water value) will be 2.5” by 4pm and another 2” by 4am Wednesday. Some of that later 2” will fall as snow. Wind today will be SW 40-50 early, rising to SW 45-60 by 1pm and WSW 50-60 by 7pm. Not the greatest day to go skiing.
By Wednesday 1am, the snow level will be at 5500’, falling to 2000’ by 7am and rising back to 3500’ by 10am. This is, remember, a lot better forecast than we had yesterday, so smile! We’ll have 2-4” of new on the ground by 4am, and then another .7” WV will arrive, for 5-7” of snow by 4pm, and another 1” WV overnight for 11-13” of new at 5000’. Wind Wednesday will be W 40-50 early and SW 30-40 by 7am for the rest of the day.
Thursday morning sees continued snowfall with lots of new on the ground, with partly cloudy conditions by noon and clear skies late in the day. The snow level will be 3000’ early, rising to 4500’ by 7am and falling back to 3000’ by 10am for the rest of the day. We’ll have 1.2” WV between 4am and 4pm for another 12-14” of new snow. Wind will be SW 30ish early, going to W 35-40 by 7am, WNW 30 (enjoy your slow lift rides) at 10am, and then, as high pressure builds off the coast, NW 20-25 by 4pm.
Friday looks clear, with temps around 28° in the morning and 34° in the afternoon at 5000’ with light wind. Saturday looks clear, and Sunday brings more snow to Mt. Hood.
As for the Gorge, the 4k surface temp model shows us warming above freezing around 1pm. The surface wind model shows west gradient by 7pm, so somewhere in that timeframe, we’ll switch from snow to freezing rain, to plain old rain. WV amounts between now and then are not pretty, and a glance at the radar image shows an awful lot of moisture headed our way. 4-5” of snow seems likely, with freezing rain after 10am for .25” of ice. (insert expletive here). But honestly, I’m just as bad at NOAA at predicting wintry precip for the Gorge, so maybe I’ll be wrong again. =)
