Good morning!
This forecast is getting tough to call.
As of now, the snow level is quite low (at the surface in the Gorge), but it’s going to rise today. It will be around 5500-6000’ at 1pm, dropping back to 5000’ overnight. We’ll see about 3.5” of water value by 7pm with another .3” by 4am Thursday. I still think we’ll see a brief period of rain between 1pm and 10pm, so let’s call this 12” of snow down low and 3 feet or more up high today with 1.5-2.0” WV (water value) snain/rain during the warm period. Wind today will be SW 35-45 at resort level this morning going to W 50-60 (shutting down many lifts) this afternoon.
Tomorrow is really tricky, and might require an update later today if the forecasted track of the low pressures system changes. As of now, tomorrow morning sees the snow level at 5500-6000’ with increasing precip. If low pressure system crosses Oregon south of Mt. Hood, as current models show, we’ll stay in the cooler air north of it, and the snow level will drop into the 3000’ range or less (but with east gradients, the snow level will be at the surface in the Gorge). We’ll see 1.5” WV by 4pm, for 10-16” of new snow. However, if the low tracks north of Mt. Hood, we’ll see all rain. Cross your fingers. It looks like it will warm up overnight, switching to rain, and remaining warm enough for rain through 7am Friday with 1” of the wet stuff falling overnight. Wind will be SW 35-40, swinging to S 20-30 by 1pm.
Friday starts off with sprinkles giving way to partly cloudy/high overcast skies. The freezing level will be at the surface in the Gorge and at 4500’ on Mt. Hood, rising during the day to 6500’ by 7pm. Precip returns in the afternoon, becoming heavy by 4pm, for .7” rain on Mt. Hood by 4am Saturday, when we’ll see a switch to snow (sorry, Tom). Friday wind will be SW 20-25 early, swinging to the S mid-afternoon and going to SW 45-55 by 7pm.
Saturday looks cold and snowy, with the snow level at 3000’ early and 1500’ by 7am. We’ll see .5-.6” WV by 4pm, for 6-7” of new snow during the day. Wind will be W 30-35 all day.
