Good morning!
Wow. Well, this is getting more and more interesting.
Today, once again, looks boring. Mostly clear sky on Mt. Hood with the freezing level around 8500’ today, except in the Gorge, where it’s 24°. Wind NW 10-20 early, building to W 25-35 around 4pm.
Winter returns tomorrow, Saturday. The freezing level will be 8500’ at 4am, 3500’ at 7am, and 500’ or less by 4pm. Snow will start falling sometime between 10am and 1pm. The wind could be an issue tomorrow, starting off at SW 40-45, picking up to WSW 45-55 by 10am and swinging to W 50-60+ at 4pm, and dropping to a still-windy W 40-50 by 7pm. Models are only showing .3” water value during the day, but strong orographics could give us much more snow. Let’s say 3-6” by closing time.
Models show another .4” water value Saturday night so I’ll say 5-7” by 4am, with another .5” water value for 6-8” more by 4pm Sunday with the freezing level at 500’ or less all day Sunday. The wind will be a bit friendlier on Sunday: W 25-35 early, dropping to W 20-25 by 10am and holding all day.
It looks like we’ll only see 1-2” of snow Sunday night into Monday, with partly cloudy skies and orographic snow flurries during the day for no significant accumulation. Wind on Monday will be WNW 25-35 early, going to WNW 30-40 by 10am. Looks like we’ll see a few more inches of snow Monday night into Tuesday, then another 5-7” during the day on Tuesday.
After that, models are two in favor of a warm, wet mess and one in favor of cold and dry. The warm, wet, messy models predict snow levels above 6000’ with 3”+ or rain on Wednesday with very strong wind, 2-3” of rain on Thursday, and several inches of rain on Friday with very strong wind. I think I’m going to vote for the less likely scenario of cold and dry.
Coming up tonight, there are rail jams at both Skibowl and Timberline. For you mountain bikers who don’t mind frigid riding, the Dimwits ride the Cascade Locks EasyCLIMB trail starting at 6:30pm. This weekend is the Burton Mountain Festival at Meadows, with free Burton demos and a snowboard rail jam on Sunday.
