Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Models think this’ll be the last of the wind for quite a while, or at least the last of the westerlies, so get on it! After today, much colder weather arrives. If we’re lucky, it’ll be cold enough for easterlies toward the end of the week. Not sure that sub-freezing weather is “lucky”, but if you’re needing wind, maybe…

Let’s chat about Monday. Early pressures were 30.03/29.93/29.88 for gradients of 0.10 and 0.05. Add in offshore high pressure of 1028mb for some invisible aid to the wind. Dawn Patrol was 20-25ish from Viento to Rufus, and the marine clouds were zipping eastward well past Hood River. Models indicate those clouds will burn off this afternoon near Hood River. Those clouds stick around all day in the metro area. That’s good news. Expect westerlies at 26-30 from Mosier eastward (and probably at Viento) by late morning. Afternoon wind rises to 28-32 from Lyle to Threemile. Models indicate Threemile will drop to 23-26 late afternoon. Models also think, despite the clouds burning back, that the Stevenson to Mosier stretch will drop to 14-17 this afternoon. Speaking of Stevenson, it’s just tricky today because clouds will likely remain all day. Head east for best results. Eat dinner at Amayah’s Indian Cafe in Biggs. All will be well. River flow yesterday was 64-81kcfs, river temp is 62F. High temp forecast is 57F for Hood River, 59F for Biggs (wind advisory posted), and 60F for Arlington (also wind advisory posted!).

Tuesday: light westerlies in the morning, calm midday, and perhaps a short bump into the teens in the afternoon ahead of a beast of a cold front coming this way. High temp: 53F. Wednesday: light and variable and showery and cold. High temp: 48F. After Wednesday, there’s some disagreement in the models. There also a hint of easterlies late next week, but they don’t look super duper strong. And it looks sub-freezing in the morning. Okay. Y’all get out there today! See you on the water!

FORECAST SPONSORED BY / AWESOME COMPANIES TO SUPPORT

Jones, Sauvie’s, Coast

Wind speed in knots. Direction Northerly unless otherwise noted for Coast. Westerly for Jones. Northerly for Sauvie Island. Sauvie Island wind sensor: sauviewind.net, but it’s done for the season! Coast: North/Central/South, waves. Wave forecast provided by NWS. Nothing to report for the next few days other than some southerlies. If there’s a worthy change, it will be noted in the Gorge wind forecast.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

First snow forecast of the season, and just today because snow’s coming. The (nearly) daily forecast for the mountain will pick up when snowfall is more regular. Monday will be sunny on the mountain with high clouds arriving overnight. The freezing level will be 10,000′ this morning, 8000′ this afternoon, and 5000′ overnight. Wind: NW 30-35 all day turning to W 15 overnight.

Tuesday starts out cloudy. Snow starts around 2pm and increases overnight. The free air freezing level will be 5000′ in the morning. The snow level will be 4000′ in the afternoon, 3500′ in the evening, and 2500′ after midnight. About 0.8” water equivalent (WE) falls overnight for 6-8” new snow at 5000′. Wind will be W 15 in the morning, WSW 15 in the afternoon, and WSW 20 overnight.

Snow showers continue on Wednesday. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 1000-1500′ overnight (near Mt. Hood, probably not near your house). About 0.1” WE is forecast during the day for an inch of new. Another 0.2” WE arrives overnight for a couple inches more. Wind: WSW 20 in the morning, WSW 10-15 in the afternoon and evening, and WNW 15-20 overnight. After Wednesday, model disagreement widens. It might continue snowing, and the weather may clear. That’s it for snow for a while. Get some!

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cloudy weather this morning turns partly cloudy later. Temps start in the mid 50’s and rise to the upper 50’s. Strong westerlies. No rainbows. Tuesday will be mostly cloudy then cloudy then wet late afternoon and very wet overnight. Temps start in the low 40’s and rise to the low 50’s. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Wednesday will be showery perhaps with a little snain mixed in early. Temps start in the mid 30’s and rise to the upper 40’s. Light and variable wind. 98% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

Lots of brown pow out there. Go get some for yourself! Hurry up, because we’re likely to enter a freeze-thaw pattern later this week, and riding could be out for several days due to the potential for damaging trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay?No trails have closed yet due to snow, but we’re likely to lose the highest-elevation trails, at least temporarily, on the 25th . If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
