Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Sunshine is the plan at least through Friday. Significant model spread starting Saturday makes it nearly impossible to come up with an accurate weekend forecast at this point, so let’s stick with what we do know. We can safely say that it won’t be raining on the mountain this weekend. We can also safely say that the groom (and thus parks and Nordic) will be excellent this week.

Tuesday kicks off cold and clear with temps in the teens at 5000′. Nordic skiers, it’s about 15F at the Nordic trails. We’ll have a sunny day for the most part – a few thin high clouds join this afternoon. The free air freezing level (FAF) near Mt. Hood will be 0′ all day. Temps at 5000′ rise to the upper 20’s. Expect relatively light wind: N 10 this morning, NW 10-15 this afternoon, and N 10 tonight.

Wednesday will be mostly clear with this exception: clouds will be about 6000′ deep in the morning and could drop a bit of freezing fog/drizzle on the lowest slopes. Above: just sunshine. The FAF will be 0′ all day, although temps will be pushing 32F in the afternoon. Wind: N 10 all day and NE 15 overnight.

Thursday sees continued sunshine, but the east side cold pool deepens. The FAF will be 0′, but temps will vary widely by elevation: it’ll be much colder low down and warmer high up. Still… models keep temps below 32F for another great packed powder day. Wind: NE 15 in the morning, SE 10-20 in the afternoon, and S 10 overnight. Temps likely pop above freezing Friday under sunny sky. After that, model spread is too great to really make any predictions. For example, the ECMWF has a decent chance of some precip starting Saturday, but the GFS is having nearly-nothing to do with that. We’ll have to wait to sort this out. But… it definitely won’t be raining on the slopes this weekend, so go ahead and make some plans to ride!

Gorge Wind Forecast

A relatively not-windy day today, Tuesday, gives way to a period of strong easterlies through at least Friday and likely for longer as cold air settle on the east side. Probably. Tuesday starts with easterlies at 5ish mph all through the Gorge, all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Rooster is actually westerly to start. We’ll see this setup all day. Stevenson maxes out at 10-15mph for a few hours midday before dropping back to 10mph. River flow readings are 81-101kcfs, river temp is 43.5F, and high temp forecast is 38F. Wednesday morning brings 20mph at Stevenson and Viento and 25ish at Rooster. Afternoon wind picks up to 25-30 at Stevenson and 30-35 at Rooster. Thursday will be very, very windy. Rooster’s average speeds will likely be near 50mph. Stevenson starts at 30ish and picks up to 40ish. Viento: 20-25+. High temp: 33F. Strong easterlies continue on Friday.

Hood River Weather Forecast

A thin and localized Nothing this morning partially breaks up this afternoon for partly cloudy sky. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and upper 30’s later. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Wednesday will be cloudy then mostly cloudy. We can’t rule out some freezing fog or drizzle or snowflakes early due to the depth of the clouds. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and mid 30’s later. Easterlies. No rainbows. Thursday will be cloudy. Temps start in the mid 20’s and rise to the low-mid 30’s. Easterlies. No rainbows.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Two events on the 17th: The Dirty Fingers KringleKrawl and a snowkiting event at Windance (4-6pm). Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Now it’s snowy on the trails! We’ll keep the freeze/thaw language just in case the snow goes somewhere (which it won’t any time soon). If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
