Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Mt. Hood has picked up all the snow it’s going to pick up for a while, but it will have plenty of sunshine as a consolation prize. For Monday, expect a sunny day. The free air freezing level will be 1000-1500′ during the day and will fall to 0′ overnight. Wind: NW 10-20mph all day.

Tuesday will be sunny. The free air freezing level will be 0′ all day with temps at 5000′ in the low 30’s. Wind will be NW 15-20 in the morning, N 10 in the afternoon, and light/variable overnight. Wednesday will be sunny all day. The free air freezing level starts at 0′ and rises to 8000′ in the afternoon. Temps at 5000′ will be in the low to mid 30’s. Wind speeds will be light in the morning and will build to NE 10 in the afternoon and variable to 10 overnight. Thursday also looks above-freezing, sunny, and not-windy on the slopes. T

The cold pool deepens on Friday, temps drop, and strong easterlies join the picture. Model disagreement starts next weekend. At best, a few inches of snow are possible, but that’s far from certain. So… enjoy the sunshine and the great groom!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies on Monday give way to not much wind at all Tuesday and then strong easterlies at least through Friday. By “strong”, I mean potentially too strong, at least at Rooster Rock! So, for Monday, we have a nice westerly gradient to start (30.00 pdx, 29.92 dls). That’s enough for 10-20ish through the Gorge to start. We should see westerlies bounce around this morning and then settle at 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles midday. River flow readings are 92-116kcfs, river temp is 44F, and high temp forecast is 41F. Tuesday will be light easterly, perhaps 10mph, near Stevenson. The rest of the Gorge should be calm. High temp: 36F. Wednesday kicks off with 20-25 at Viento, 25-30 at Stevenson, and 25-40 at Rooster. The wind builds to 30-35 at Stevenson and 40-50 at Rooster in the afternoon. Thursday: 50mph at Rooster. Friday: 60mph at Rooster. High temp: 34F. That’s a wind chill of 16F.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Two events on the 17th: The Dirty Fingers KringleKrawl and a snowkiting event at Windance (4-6pm). Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Now it’s snowy on the trails! We’ll keep the freeze/thaw language just in case the snow goes somewhere (which it won’t any time soon). If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
