Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

46” of snow has fallen over the last three days on Mt. Hood. About 5” fell overnight. Skibowl chimed in: they are opening Saturday afternoon. Meadows Nordic had to delay opening until tomorrow (Friday) due to massive snowfall. We’ll have limited snowfall over the next few days. But don’t worry!. Cold temps will keep the snow primo! This is good timing for a break – I’m leaving on a meditation retreat on Friday. The next forecast will be next Thursday. Also, I will probably switch the forecast to the evening at that time as it just makes more sense for people planning to ski! We’ll be back to morning forecasts when wind season returns.

So, for Thursday, we’ll have mostly cloudy sky and flurries today with a bit more snow overnight. The snow level near Mt. Hood will be 500-1000′, and it’ll fall to 0′ tonight. Just a trace of snow is forecast today, and 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast tonight, for an inch or two more. Wind: W 25 this morning, SW 10-20 midday, WSW 15-20 this afternoon, and W 20 overnight.

Friday starts with clear sky above a 5000 foot thick cloud deck. High clouds arrive mid-morning, and the sky remains partly clear until sunset. After that: clear sky. No precip. Snow level near Mt. Hood: 0′ all day and all night. Wind: W 20 in the morning fading to S 5-15 in the afternoon and S 10-20 overnight. You may remember that we previously had a chance of quite the snowstorm Friday night with a huge spread in possible outcomes? Well, the low that brought all those possibilities has made up its mind to go too far offshore for a snowstorm on Mt. Hood.

Saturday looks clear in the morning, high overcast in the evening, and cloudy overnight. The snow level will be 0′ near Mt. Hood for the 24 hour period. Wind: S 10-20 in the morning, SE 10-20 in the afternoon, and E 25 overnight. A couple inches of snow are possible on Sunday and a trace on Monday. There’s a possibility for several inches of snow Tuesday into Wednesday, but there’s not a lot of certainty about that yet. Have a lovely opening weekend!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light westerlies today (Thursday) stick around west of swell. Light easterlies are the plan for the eastern Gorge. River flow readings are 79-119 kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 37F. Friday will be light westerly prior to dawn. Easterlies build during the day and max out at 25-30 near Stevenson and Rooster. Saturday’s easterlies kick off at 40-50 at Rooster, 35-40 at Stevenson, and 20-25 near Viento. The rest of the Gorge adds east wind at 10-15mph as a low transits offshore. Sunday’s easterlies starts at 45mph and drop to 30mph. Monday currently looks light and variable.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Mostly cloudy weather this morning adds some drizzle/wet snow intermittently through tonight. 1/2” to 2” snow is forecast for the Hood River Valley in the 24 hour period. Temps will be in the mid to upper 30’s all day and will fall to the 20’s tonight. Light westerlies becomes light and variable. 43% chance of rainbows. Friday will be cloudy/Nothing to start, partly cloudy later, and partly cloudy overnight. Temps start in the upper 20’s (or less) and rise to the mid 30’s. Light westerlies prior to dawn turn easterly by midday. No rainbows. Saturday will be partly Nothing to start with a good chance of some blue sky. Temp start in the low to mid 20’s and rise just to freezing. Easterlies. No rainbows. A wee bit of snow is possible Sunday before dry weather (most likely) returns through the middle of next week.

Local-ish Events

Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Now it’s snowy on the trails! We’ll keep the freeze/thaw language just in case the snow goes somewhere (which it won’t any time soon). If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
