Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s a cloudy start to the day on Mt. Hood, and there’s just an inch of new snow on the ground from the last 24 hours. There’s not much in the forecast over the next couple of weeks, so ski season won’t be starting just yet. One exception is Teacup. They used a snowmobile to pack down a narrow trail. So… it’s not exactly groomed, but you could go play around in the snow! Before we get too deep into this… if you’re reading this, you love outdoor sports. Pure Stoke in Hood River is hiring right now. You could convert your love for human-powered sports into a career at a shop with awesome bosses. These jobs are open now: Customer Service/Retail Sales Associate; Accounts/Inventory Manager; Marketing/Web Manager. Email your resume to the shop to apply.

On to the forecast… Clouds and a few flurries on the mountain this morning give way to sunshine this afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 500′-1000′ for the 24 hour period. Just a trace of snow is forecast. Wind: E 10-15 this morning, E 20-25 this afternoon and evening, and NE 10 overnight.

Wednesday will be clear and sunny in the mountains. The free air freezing level will be 0-500′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight. No precip. Wind: NE 10 in the morning, NW 20-25 in the afternoon, and WNW 15-20 overnight. Friday looks sunny and warmer with high clouds moving in during the afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 8000′ all day and will rise as high as 10,000′ overnight. Wind: SE 20 in the morning, SE 25 in the afternoon, and S 5-15 overnight.

There’s a slight chance of some precip on Sunday, but most members of the ensembles call for dry weather. Generally speaking, the next two weeks look dry. Temps warm above 0C at 5000′ on Saturday and look to hold there for a good long while. Continue with dryland training until this changes!

Gorge Wind Forecast

With the exception of Wednesday afternoon, the forecast is mostly for easterlies for the next five days or so. For Tuesday, the easterlies build to 30-35 at Rooster, 20-25 at Stevenson, and 15-20 at Viento. Viento fades to 10-15 late in the day, but the spots farther west should hold. River flow readings are 108-141kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 41F. Wednesday starts with calm wind and temps in the 20’s. Brr. In the afternoon, we should see westerlies at 12-16 from Stevenson to Hood river. High temp: 45F under sunny sky. Thursday starts calm and very cold. Easterlies slowly build in the afternoon and reach 30mph near Rooster and perhaps Stevenson in the afternoon. High temp: 45F under sunny sky. Friday’s easterlies look even stronger and should last all day. Sunny too! If you’re still reading this in November, you’re pretty hardcore and probably know gear. Perhaps you’d like a job? Pure Stoke is hiring. This is your chance to be part of an awesome team. Email the shop your resume for a shot at these awesome jobs.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Here is a new event: “Unwind from your day with a calming mindfulness experience along the Indian Creek Trail. Each session will include walking meditation, gratitude practice, and connection with others. Emily, your guide, will facilitate individual and group experiences through a practice known as “forest bathing” or “shinrin yoku.” Please come prepared for uneven terrain although there is no significant elevation change. The total distance walked will be between one and two miles. Please be prepared for rain and darkness. An umbrella and lantern/flashlight are recommended. We will meet at the entrance to the trail near the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road in Hood River, Oregon. Open to ages 9+ Suggested donation $10-20 per session. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Mondays in November: 11/7, 11/14, 11/21, 11/28 from 5:15-6:15 .”

Cycling

Today is your best chance to get some dirt before we drop into several days of freeze-thaw conditions. Once that happens, the best riding will be on gravel roads or on pavement. Please don’t ride muddy trails – you’ll damage them, and someone will have to come after you and fix them. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
