Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Rain and snow are both in the forecast for the next few days as a very active weather pattern takes over. Tuesday, however, looks dry on the mountain. It’ll be cloudy all day. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 6000′ in the morning and 10,000′ from late afternoon on. Wind: SSW 10-20 all day and night.
Wednesday will be dry and high overcast during the day with rain overnight. The snow level will be 10,000′ in the morning, 12,000′ in the afternoon, and down to 8000′ overnight. Rain starts around 11pm. About 0.5” rain falls by 5am Thursday. Wind: SSW 10-20 in the morning builds to SW 20-40 in the afternoon and overnight.
Thursday starts with rain and switches to snow, but most of the precip will fall before the drop in temps. The snow level will be 8000′ in the morning, 5000′ in the evening, and 4000′ overnight. About 0.7” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day. That’ll probably be 1/2” rain followed by 1-2” wet snow. Another 0.1” WE is forecast overnight for another inch of snow. Wind: SW 20-40 in the morning, WSW 40-60 in the afternoon, and SW 20-40 after midnight.
Models suggest the snow level will hold around 3500′ to 4000′ on Friday. 4-6” of snow is forecast during the day. Overnight, the sky will clear and the freezing level will drop to 2000′ or so. As of right now, extended models suggest a cool, wet next week with the potential for significant snowfall. That sounds good to me, and it probably sounds good to you too!
Gorge Wind Forecast
Easterlies continue for three more mornings, and then a short blast of westerlies rips through the Gorge. On Tuesday, you’ll find dry weather. Easterlies start at 30-35 at Rooster and 15-20 at Rooster and Stevenson. In the afternoon, the wind drops to 10-15 at Rooster and 20-25 at Stevenson. River flow is 98,500cfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 52F.
Wednesday daytime will also be dry. Easterlies start at 30-35 at Rooster and 20-25 at Stevenson. They’ll bump up 5-10mph midday and fall back to where they started in the afternoon. High temp: 55F. Thursday looks rainy as a cold front swings through. The day starts with easterlies at 15-25. When the front moves through mid-afternoon, we’ll see a few hours of strong westerlies. It’s unclear if the wind will fill in near Hood River, but it should max out at gusty 25-30 from Rooster to Viento and east of Mosier or The Dalles. If you’re going to try it, you’ll likely have to drive pre-emptively. High temp: 55.
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.
