Gorge Wind Forecast

Another windy day is on tap today, and the fun keeps going this weekend. It’s not just you – the Gorge Downwind Champs are happening, and all those happy people are going to love this. The rest of you happy people: keep an eye out for increased numbers of downwind floating objects coming through between Stevenson and Hood River.

Let’s look at Friday. Marine clouds made it halfway into the Gorge last night, and they’re keeping the western Gorge cool and refreshing this morning. They’ll stick around through late morning in Stevenson keeping the wind light. For the rest of the Gorge, we’ll see the wind start at 21-24 from Viento to Swell with 13-16 from Mosier to The Dalles and 20-23 out east. Don’t let yourself get dragged too far east to early – gradients of 0.17 and 0.02 indicate you should stay close to home. What you see (wind-wise) is pretty much what you get through early afternoon – a bump to 24-27 from Viento to Hood River and Moiser is likely. Afternoon wind dips in the western Gorge in response to a shortwave; expect 15-18 from Swell to Mosier (22-25 Stevenson to Viento). Move east mid-afternoon, and you’ll find gusty 22-27 from Lyle to Doug’s, 26-29 at Rufus with 23-26 at Arlington. River flow is 139kcfs, river temp is 70F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 79F.

Moving on to Saturday, we see high pressure pushing in from the Four Corners area. That causes pressure rises on the east side and lowers the cross-Cascade gradient a bit. Dawn Patrol westerlies will be 15-18 from Viento to Swell with 8-11 at Stevenson and east of Swell to Arlington. Midday: 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River with light wind to the east. Late day westerlies bump to 21-24 between Stevenson and the Dalles, climb to 10-13 and Rufus, and stay light and variable east of there. High temp for Hood River: 84F.

Sunday’s max wind appears to be 21-24 between Viento and Hood River. Stevenson joins in early afternoon. In the evening, the wind extends to The Dalles at 21-24 and climbs to 17-20 at Rufus. The forecast for the eastern Gorge is light and variable all day. Current forecast for the start of next week: 24-27 Monday and 27-31 on Tuesday. Have a lovely day!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
