Gorge Wind Forecast

Low pressure dominates the weather picture over the Pacific Northwest for at least the next week. We’ll be relying on something other than the missing NE Pacific High to drive the westerlies. Looking at Tuesday, we start with lackluster gradients of .05 and .05. Distant high pressure off the California coast will help, as will distant low pressure over NV, ID, and WY. Morning wind will be 10mph or less in the western Gorge with 11-14 east of The Dalles. By midday, the wind builds to gusty 19-22 from Mosier to Rufus with 10-13 west of Mosier and east to Arlington. Desert heat and the heat low over ID takes the wind to gusty 23-27 from The Dalles to Arlington this afternoon with 10-13in the western Gorge. River flow is 250kcfs, river temp is 58F, and high temp for Hood River is 66F.

Wednesday brings another day of inland low pressure under high overcast sky with a chance of thunder in the evening. With this particular setup (instability), we’ll often see models predict something that doesn’t materialize. Wednesday may follow that pattern. Morning wind will be 5-10 in the western Gorge with 10-13 from The Dalles to Arlington. Midday: gusty 19-23 from Mosier to Celilo with 10-13 in the west and light/variable wind east of Celilo or perhaps east of Rufus. A suspicious tightening of gradients happens on the GFS in the afternoon along with instability along the Cascade Crest. That mode insists on a few hours of 23-26 from Mosier to Rufus. With 10-13 in the west and variable wind east of John Day Dam. Be skeptical, but take advantage if it happens. High temp: 67F.

Offshore low pressure drags a strong cold front towards the PNW on Thursday. Gusty westerlies result. Morning wind will be 10-13 at Stevenson with gusty 19-22 from Viento to Boardman. Afternoon wind drops to 7-10 in the western Gorge and rises to gusty, up-and-down 21-24 from The Dalles to Boardman. High temp: 68F. Friday looks rainy. Saturday starts showery and ends with light to moderate westerlies. Sunday’s models hint at easterlies. Have a great week!
