Gorge Wind Forecast

Fishing boats are out in large numbers again this morning, which tells me that it’s not yet windy. Don’t despair – westerlies are coming. After today, though, we’re looking at an extended period of easterlies as Willy Valley heating outpaces desert heating.

For Saturday, we’ll start with 5-10 most places and 13-16 east of the Deschutes River. Give the PNW a bit of time to heat up, and you’ll find 12-15 in the west and 22-25 from Avery to Arlington. River flow is 59,200cfs, temp is 65, and high temp in Hood River is forecast to be 67.

Sunday starts with light and variable wind, delighting the Tri Club swimmers, the people fishing, and those of you who have a rowing shell. The wind picks up to E 15-20 from Rooster to Viento midday and holds. East of Viento, afternoon westerlies climb to 5-8mph. High temp: 73.

If you’re looking for stronger easterlies, aim for Monday. Rooster starts with 30-40, holds most of the day, and drops to 20-25 in the afternoon. Stevenson should see 25-30, and Viento will have 20-25. Afternoon wind drops about 10mph in the west and picks up to E 10-15 from Hood River to Arlington. Slightly lesser easterlies return for Tuesday.

Kiting is allowed again at the Marina. Event Site Launch-and-Land starts October 5th. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Cycling

9/26: Hood River County lands have reopened. 0.5” rain fell on Friday, 9/25 in Hood River. Trails will be muddy and slick. Ride them, and you are likely to damage them. Best to give them a day. Mt. Hood National Forest is closed to all uses due to windstorm damage (downed trees and power lines) from the Labor Day windstorm. Syncline/Coyote Wall: reopened. Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood are closed due to fire danger. Respect the closures. Try out some gravel riding instead!
