Gorge Wind Forecast
There’s basically zero wind on the river on this fine Sunday morning, and the wind forecast continues to be less than exciting until the evening. Westerlies return on Monday and stick around for at least a couple more days.
For Sunday, it’s as close to not-windy as you can get around here without being perfectly glassy: light and variable wind starts the day. We’ll see pretty much that until the evening, although Stevenson may see a period of E 10-15 mid-afternoon. As a shortwave swings through mid to late afternoon, thunderstorms and their accompanying unpredictable wind becomes likely. So, from 2pm-8pm, all sorts of things could happen, but given the chances of lightning, you shouldn’t be on the water. After 8pm, the wind turns westerly at 20-23 from Stevenson to Rowena. River flow is 141kcfs. Temp is 70. Forecast high for Hood River: 101.
Lingering instability on Monday morning puts us at risk for scattered lightning. That should mellow out as the day goes on. Westerlies start the day at 16-19 from Viento to The Dalles and 13-16 east to Arlington. Midday: 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Afternoon: 20-23 from Stevenson to Arlington. High temp: 95.
Tuesday morning starts with 14-17 from Viento to Hood River with 5-10 in the eastern Gorge. By late morning, we’ll have 24-28 from Viento to Mosier. That fills in from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon. Ditto for Wednesday: max westerlies at 24-28.
Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).
