Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a late start to the morning for the weather forecaster – had to do a little shopping for a baby shower before the stores got crowded. But now, it’s on to your regularly scheduled edition of “what fun thing am I going to do today”. Well, you’ll probably get on the river. There’s far less chance you’ll be on the river on Sunday, a better chance Monday afternoon, and a sure thing for Tuesday, assuming you’re not working.

Saturday morning starts with a lingering cold front moving through to the north and gradients of .09 and .03. Morning wind is in the 14-18ish range most places with less at Arlington. We’ll see the wind build to 24-27 from Viento to Mosier by mid-morning. Afternoon wind picks up to 24-27 out to Rufus, drops to 20-23 at Swell, rises to 21-24 at Stevenson, and then kicks in at 21-24 late in the day at Arlington. River flow is 119kcfs and temp is 69 degrees. High temp: 80.

Sunday starts off with 10-13 from Viento to Swell with light or calm wind east of there. With temps nearly equal across the Cascades, the Gorge will struggle to produce wind. For now, let’s call it light westerlies through early afternoon. It does seems like we’ll get a bump to 10-13 or 13-16 after 2pm from Stevenson to Hood River. High temp: 88.

Monday starts out calm and ends up windy. It appears the wind stays calm or light pretty much everywhere until early afternoon, at least. Late afternoon wind picks up to 17-21 from Stevenson to The Dalles. High temp: 93. Windier weather is on tap for Tuesday.

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, further restrictions are now in place. Remember: crowds lead to closures. First, kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Third, Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you are likely to be ticketed. Next, parking has been further reduced along the waterfront – various restrictions are in place due to crowding at Frog Beach. The Nichols boat dock remains closed due to crowding.

Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Some of you will be tempted to go out backcountry skiing. Please don’t – accidents do happen, and you may put others at risk. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail only.
