Gorge Wind Forecast
Westerlies continue despite the heat today, and they’ll increase as high temps drop tomorrow. You may be wishing for a rest day by the end of the weekend, as the wind will blow each and every day! Reminder – these are predictions for the average wind speed, not for the lulls, gusts, or range. For Thursday, expect a very hot and muggy day along with your wind. Viento is the only spot blowing at dawn. By mid-morning, we should see 15-18 from Viento to Swell, perhaps to Hood River as well. The wind slowly builds today, heading for gusty 22-26 from Hood River to The Dalles by the afternoon. Stevenson to Swell will probably be a bit lighter, holding in the 20-23 range. Rufus, very, very hot Rufus, joins in this evening with 24-27. The river stays calm, or close to it, east of there. River flow is 185kcfs and temp is 69 degrees. Cooler air finally fills the western half of the state on Friday. With heat still in the desert, we’re set for a day of strong westerlies. Expect 26-29 from Viento to Rufus to start the day. Afternoon wind will be gusty 28-32 most locations from Viento to Threemile, with the eastern Gorge peaking late. Some areas, such as Swell and Hood River, may be gusty, and may drop into the low 20’s due to the setup. Stevenson tops out at 23-26. Looking at Saturday, we see another round of gusty westerlies. Morning wind will be 22-26 from Viento to The Dalles with 18-22 in the eastern Gorge and 10-13 near Stevenson. We’ll see the wind settle at gusty 25-28 from Stevenson to Avery in the afternoon with 13-16 at Rufus and light and variable wind farther east. Sunday’s forecast is currently gusty 25-29. Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, further restrictions are now in place. Remember: crowds lead to closures. First, kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Third, Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you are likely to be ticketed. Next, parking has been further reduced along the waterfront – various restrictions are in place due to crowding at Frog Beach. The Nichols boat dock remains closed due to crowding.Coast, Jones, Sauvie’st
