Gorge Wind Forecast
Oregon and Washington are encouraging people to not travel more than 50 miles (not mph!) to access recreation. Non-essential travel is still being strongly discouraged in ALL jurisdictions. Land managers and law enforcement are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. There is NO camping allowed at any of the river parks. Please don’t camp unlawfully; doing so risks access for everyone, including for people who just want to use the parks for a picnic. Please follow the directions of your local government officials and help keep the Gorge community safe. Thank you! First off, two beach updates this morning. Roosevelt and Plymouth are now CLOSED to day use due to park damage suffered during the windstorm on Super Saturday. East Mayer Park, aka Rowena, is now OPEN. This opening is conditional and based on people following social distancing guidelines. Clouds from a weak frontal system made it deeper into the Gorge than expected on this lovely Wednesday morning. That will not stop the wind. Early gradients were W .09 and E .02, indicating you’ll want to be in the western Gorge, at least for now. Wind speeds were not quite in line with gradients, except at the Event Site where mid 20’s were present. Other locations: 12-15 in the western Gorge. Light and variable east of The Dalles. We’ll see the wind build to 20-23 by noon from Stevenson to Mosier. Afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 25-28 from Stevenson to The Dalles. River flow is 368kcfs and temp is 57 degrees.
A “saggy jet stream” sags into the area on Thursday. In response, we’ll see clouds and moderate westerlies. Best guess as of right now: 15-18 from Stevenson to Swell in the morning. 15-18 from Stevenson to Doug’s in the afternoon.
A cold front approaches on Friday. That will drag cooler air into the metro area in the afternoon. While large gradients will be present, the afternoon wind will likely be quite gusty everywhere except Stevenson. Morning wind on Friday: calm or light westerly, depending on where you go. Mid afternoon sees the wind build quickly to gusty 26-29 from Stevenson to Doug’s with a shot at 29-33 from Rowena to Rufus in the evening. Looking longer range, Sunday is currently tagged as “very windy” all through the Gorge. Let’s keep it tentative.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Mt. Hood Meadows is now allowing uphill travel within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Some of you will be tempted to go out backcountry skiing. Please don’t – accidents do happen, and you may put others at risk. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail ONLY.
