Tuesday: more of this typical spring weather…

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when you’re under a stay-at-home order? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider contributing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to support me and get the email version? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $19.99 or more gets you a year. Click below to contribute. Thank you!!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Oregon and Washington are encouraging people to not travel more than 50 miles (not mph!) to access recreation. Non-essential travel is still being strongly discouraged in ALL jurisdictions. Land managers and law enforcement are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. There is NO camping allowed at any of the river parks. Please don’t camp unlawfully; doing so risks access for everyone, including for people who just want to use the parks for a picnic. Please follow the directions of your local government officials and help keep the Gorge community safe. Thank you!

Moderate to strong westerlies continue for the next few days with temps in the mid 70’s. River flow is quite strong right now, and so is the current. Please keep that in mind when recreating. On Tuesday, a weak cold front, evidenced by scattered high clouds, will swing by to the north, affecting wind quality. Morning wind will be light westerly through the whole Gorge. We’ll see a slow build to 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River by midday. Afternoon wind will rise to gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus. Expect up-and-down conditions, especially near Swell, which does not respond well to frontal passages. Expect the wind there to drop into the upper teens or low 20’s after a short-lived mid-20’s session in the early afternoon. River flow is very high – 409kcfs, and temp is 56 degrees.

Wednesday sees moderate offshore high pressure combine with lower pressure in the desert for a steadier day. Morning wind will be 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River. Afternoon: 25-28 from Stevenson to Avery. Morning westerlies on Thursday also start at 12-15. With a weak low pressure system off the coast, westerlies struggle to gain much strength. Afternoon wind maxes out at 16-19 from Stevenson to The Dalles, briefly, before shifting east to Moiser and dropping in the west.
