Gorge Wind Forecast

Offshore low pressure continues to add a case of the gusties to the wind for the next several day. That said, onshore flow continues through the weekend with intermittent sunshine and seasonable temps.

For Thursday, we have an offshore battle between California high pressure and BC low pressure. Gorge wind will be limited as a result, giving you perfect conditions for your lighter wind activities. Morning westerlies will be in the 10-13 or 7-10 range everywhere through the Gorge. Desert heating adds a little kick this afternoon, taking the wind to 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles. River flow is 133kcfs and temp is 66 degrees.

That offshore high pressure shifts north just enough for a stronger, steadier west wind day. Morning wind starts at 7-10 from Viento to Hood River. While that’s not all that impressive, we will see the wind climb. By 1pm or so, the wind will be in the 21-24 range from Stevenson to Hood River. It’ll fill in to Doug’s later in the afternoon.

Another offshore low approaches on Saturday. Not great, but it will bring deeper marine clouds to Portland and stronger, gustier wind to the Gorge. We should have 16-19 right off the bat from Viento to Moiser. As the clouds burn off, the wind picks up to 24-27 from Viento to Avery with 14-17 near Stevenson and Rufus. Sunday’s forecast currently looks like 21-25. Looking longer range, if nothing changes, westerlies continue through at least the middle of next week.

Road and Mountain Biking

There was some rain Tuesday afternoon in the higher regions of Post Canyon. It’s mixed tack and dust up there right now. The 44 Road trails and Sandy Ridge are likely good too. Other than that… All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Mt. Margaret still has snow. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!
