Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s Monday morning, and once again I slept in. Perhaps it’s time to remove the light-blocking curtains and go back to the translucent winter curtains? Anyway, as I’ve been repeating for several days, we’re headed into a fall-like pattern of increased clouds, low pressure offshore, and weak weather systems. The wind for the next few days will be gusty and inconsistent, as well as difficult to predict.
With all that said, Monday’s starting off with gradients of .07 and .04. River flow is 65,500cfs (very low) and temp is 68 degrees. We’ll see westerlies at 14-18 under the clouds in the west with 7-11 east of The Dalles to start the day. In the afternoon, there’s some model disagreement. Best guess: gusty 14-17 under the clouds and gusty 20-23 from Lyle to Arlington.
Tuesday sees a low drop south along the coast while an accompanying wave moves through the Gorge. This gives us W 5-8 everywhere to start the day. Afternoon westerlies should be gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to Arlington. Wednesday has that low right off the mouth of the Columbia. A decrease in gradients is offset by a weak weather system moving through. We’ll have W 5-8 everywhere to start with disagreement in the models for the afternoon. Best guess: gusty, unreliable, inconsistent 19-22 from Stevenson (on and off rain all day) to Arlington (probably sunny).
The long range forecast doesn’t contain much: gusty, moderate-strength westerlies Thursday and Friday and offshore wind on Saturday.

Tuesday looks cloudy with rain after 2pm. Slight chance of thudner in the afternoon. Snow level: 8000′. Wind: W 10 early, WSW 15 midday, W 10 overnight. Wednesday looks cloudy with rain. Slightly larger chance of thunder in the afternoon. Snow level 8000′ falling to 7000′ in the afternoon. Total rain: up to 1/4” for the 24 hour period. Wind: W 10 early, SW 15 midday, SW 10 overnight.

Partly cloudy sky all day for Monday. Temps will be near 60 early and just below 70 later. Moderate westerlies. 100% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks partly to mostly cloudy in the morning with convective clouds and a chance of thunder in the afternoon. Slight chance of sprinkles before 8am. Bigger chance of sprinkles after 5pm. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and upper 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate westerlies. 17% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks mostly cloudy in the morning and cloudy in the afternoon with a bigger chance of thunder. Slight chance of light sprinkles during the day. Slightly larger chance of drizzle between 5pm and 9pm. Temps will be near 50 early and in the mid 60’s later. Moderate westerlies. 34% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking
Trails on private timberland (Hospital Hill, Whoopdee, Underwood, and anything else on Kreps, Stevenson, Weyerhauser, etc.) will remain closed to ALL uses until the end of fire session. Motorized vehicles, chainsaws, campfires, and smoking are banned from public lands in Oregon and Washington.
Group bike rides: Triathlon practice Tuesday, 6pm at West Mayer Park. Wednesday: Post n’ Pinot women’s MTB ride at Dirty Finger, 5:30. Families at Family Man: 6pm Wednesday. Thursday: Mountain View Cycles women’s MTB, 5:30, bottom of Post. Post n’ Pint: race-pace coed ride from Dirty Fingers at 5:30. Free pint of beer after. Friday: Mountain View Cycles MTB ride: 5pm (shop? Bottom of post?). Saturday: Mountain View Cycles road ride: 9am at the shop.
Upcoming Events
Our Monday community events start with by donation yoga at Flow at 8;30. There’s meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon, a free stress reduction class at HAVEN in The Dalles at 5:30, yoga at Samadhi at 6, and Zumba at Mid-Valley Elementary at 6:30. There’s also pickup kickball at Bingen’s Daubenspeck Park at 6.
This weekend’s events include a free half-day meditation retreat at the White Salmon Grange form 1 to 5 on Saturday with a dozen or so monks. The Music Festival of the Gorge is Saturday from noon to 10pm at Hood River’s Waterfront Park. Sunday’s the Gorge Kids Triathlon and Timberline Trail shuttles with Fat Fire Farm.
