Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Tuesday morning, and it’s going to be a very windy week in the Gorge. We’ll see decreasing temps and increasing marine air each day. For Tuesday, the day starts with Dawn Patrol at 22-25 from Viento to Swell with 5-10 to the west and 13-16 to the east. The wind will build to 26-29 from Stevenson to Rufus with 23-26 near Arlington.

Wednesday starts with 21-24 from Viento to Mosier and picks up to 24-28 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 20-23 east of The Dalles. An approaching system in the afternoon could have a detrimental effect on wind quality.

That system moves through on Thursday, likely making the gradients big and the wind not quite as big as the gradients would suggest. An additional impact will be the penetration of marine clouds all the way to Hood River. This setup starts us off with 18-22 from Stevenosn to Hood River and 23-26 east of Hood River. As those clouds burn off, the wind fires up, climbing to 28-32 from Stevenson (last to join the party) to Arlington. 30-35 is possible from Lyle to Rufus.

Friday’s forecast currently starts with extensive low clouds in the west, giving us 23-26 east of Hood River and 18-22 west of Mosier. Looking at the weekend, we have a subject-to-change forecast of 23—26 Saturday and gusty, frontally driven westerlies at 18-23 on Sunday with a chance of … wait for it… rain! Just FYI, I will be gone Saturday through the following Wednesday.

BONUS: Jones Tuesday: 16-19. Wednesday: 14-17. Thrusday: 5-10. Sauvie’s Tuesday: 10-13. Wednesday: 5-8. Thrusday: X. Coast (north/central/south). Tuesday: X/X/15-20, NW swell 3′ @ 8 seconds. Wednesday: X/X/5-10, NW 4′ @ 8. Thursday: X/X/ 25-30, W 5′ @ 12 (finally!).

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the fun things that can happen to us humans is that we get ‘triggered’ by something. In technical parlance, this means our fight-flight-freeze system gets triggered. We then do things that, in the moment, we perceive as protective. The problem is that we aren’t quite in our right minds.

When we calm down, we may find ourselves ashamed of what we’ve done. Maybe we drank, used drugs, lied, got violent, ran away, curled up in a ball on the floor, or did any number of things that left us asking, “Why the heck did I do that?” That’s the ideal outcome – many people just feel ashamed or regretful.

The key, when this happens, is to ask “Why?” and explore the reasons for our behavior. Bringing a sense of curiosity to the situation, perhaps a sense of amazement at and awe of our bad behavior can help us face our silliness. Exploring it will give us more power the next time we are ‘triggered’, and that can help us behave better. May you be calm and grounded. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

There’s smoke above us this morning and maybe some high clouds too. Temps will be in the low 70’s and muggy early with low 90’s and not-so-muggy this afternoon. Strong west wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks cooler. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and upper 80’s later with continued smoke. Strong west wind. No rainbows. Thursday will probably start with low clouds in the western Gorge. These burn off in the afternoon. Smoke goes away on Wednesday due to upper level west flow. Temps will be near 60 early and in the upper 70’s (cold!) in the afternoon. Strong west wind. No rainbows. The long-range forecast contains rain at the beginning of the week.
