The activities include a speaker series, a startup competition for outdoor driven brands, an expo, hands-on workshops, creatives games and art, outdoor activities and sports on site, networking hours, outdoor films and music performances.

OutFound’s goal is to bring outdoor enthusiasts and innovators together for 3 days of experiential activities. Outdoor innovation is about out of the box thinking and this mixture of activities encourages that. We believe that getting adventure enthusiasts and leaders together in a creative setting will be a catalyst for exciting new ideas, projects and businesses in the outdoor space.

Gorge Wind Forecast

One of the things I think I and all of us need to pay more attention to is when there are a lot of caveats and “yes and” and “yes but” in the forecast. That’s usually a sign that the driving around and looking for wind will likely be longer-lasting than the actually time on the water. Anyway, yesterday’s weather system allowed the gradient-driven wind to go somewhere other than on the river, for the most part, although I did see some of you made it out.

We’ll have a similar struggle today: the marine layer is already in place, but another disturbance will come through during the day and destabilize the situation a bit. 6am gradients of .11 (pdx-dls) and .12 (dls-psc) are big enough that we’ll have wind. The question is whether the wind will match the big gradients. Enough with the caveats.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

First, you will find the strongest, steadiest wind east of of the low clouds. That suggests you can head east of Hood River for 23-26 this morning, with Mosier to Arlington likely to be good. Looking at the afternoon, a weak disturbance will reinforce the marine layer and also impact the stability of the wind field. So, we’ll probably see gusty 24-28, most likely the lower end of that range. Arlington is a big maybe later today – the GFS suggests it’ll be on the edge of the windy area. So, your best bets today are Mosier, Rowena/Doug’s (likely gusty) Avery (less gusty) and Celilo (bad juju). While the wind will likely be strong near Rufus, the current is 443kcfs, which will leave you fighting to go downwind. River temp is 55 degrees. 6539 Chinook made it past Bonneville yesterday.

That was a lot of words for one day’s forecast. Looking at Thursday, low pressure sits over the inland Northwest, knocking down gradients and destabilizing the atmosphere, especially in the afternoon. The current run of the GFS suggests W 10-13 or perhaps 12-15 early in the morning with a fade to light westerlies in the afternoon. I wouldn’t be surprise to see the morning wind hold all day, especially if it’s cloudy in Portland and sunny out east.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday currently look like light wind days, perfect for road biking, SUPing, mountain biking, paragliding, spraying orchards, hunting mushrooms, tanning, and whatever else people do on not-windy days.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was listening to my wise monk friends talk last night, and one of them said something that touched me deeply: who we are now, and where we’re at is merely a summation of the karma we’ve accumulated. While I don’t subscribe to that entirely, and you probably don’t either, it makes sense in psychological terms as well: who we are, and where we’re at, is a summation of what we’ve experienced in life, how we’ve learned to protect/advance ourselves, and the systemic influences acting upon us.

Much of our social learning occurs in childhood when our worlds are smaller and each experience has more impact. Because of this, who we are now has largely been shaped by a time when we had little control over our situation and few choices of how to respond. Think about that. You are who you are in a large part because of what happened when you were a powerless child. Give yourself some compassion and recognition the next time you get self-critical.

Understanding this, we can start to react with self-kindness when we do something that results in guilt, regret or shame. We can choose to learn new responses to the world. And if we know that we’re doing okay right now, in spite of everything that’s happened, we can be proud of ourselves and more self-loving. Whether you call it karma or experiences, it’s shaped you. And you’re okay despite all that, even if you don’t feel that way all the time. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy and cool in Hood River this morning, and if you want to get all obsessive about the open-close windows thing, you can, but the high temp today is forecast to be just 62 degrees. Leaving the windows open all day will be A-ok, other than the wind blowing stuff around inside your house. Tomorrow starts partly cloudy with temps in the mid-40’s and climbs to muggy mid-70’s. Slight chance of convective clouds in the afternoon gives us a good chance for a colorful sunset. Light wind. No rainbows. Friday looks sunny. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the low 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

I don’t have any additional updates, so let’s go through the need-to-know stuff again: Rowena Curves are closed due to a rockslide and hill stabilization efforts. No dogs are allowed on Hospital Hill until the cattle are gone, and several trails are closed due to logging: Innerwoods, below the bench, and roads leading to Innerwoods. There’s a work party on the Pine Mont trails on Saturday. The Sisters Stampede, which is supposed to be quite a hoot, is on Sunday.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include free yoga at 6:30am at Flow. There are sailboat races at the Hood River Marina this evening, pickup touch rugby at the Waterfront Park at 5:45, and Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6. Tomorrow evening is the dirty Fingers shop rides: a race-pace ride and a women’s only ride both leave the shop at 5:30, and both earn you a free pint of beer.

Have an awesome day today!
