Gorge Wind Forecast

Today, Tuesday, is a very interesting day on the Columbia. As of 7am, there was zero cross-Cascade gradient and zero wind, glassy conditions, on the river. A trough of low pressure and an associated weak weather system will approach the NW this afternoon, sending colder, denser air into the western half of the state. With high pressure offshore, this combo, along with a heat low in the desert, will bump up the gradients.

All this atmospheric movement doesn’t bode well for the quality of the wind. That said, it will be quite windy this afternoon, especially if you’re picky about locations. So, expect W 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s by about 1pm. The wind will ramp up to 25-29 from Stevenson to Arlington this afternoon. Given the messiness of the setup, I think it’s likely the Swell area will see strong and consistent wind for just a couple of hours. The Rowena area will likely be quite gusty as well. Rufus will be dealing with 387kcfs of current, down from the last week, but still strong. Arlington should benefit from this setup. Stevenson will probably be the winner today, with the longest-lasting, steadiest wind. The wind, by the way, will continue through the evening and overnight.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

We’ll start out with leftovers and a more stable setup tomorrow. Gradients will be stacked up in the western Gorge, but the exact location of Dawn Patrol will depend on the exact location of the clouds. Guessing, I’d say Mosier to Doug’s with 24-27 to start the day. By late morning or early afternoon on Wednesday, we should be seeing 26-30 from Hood River to Rufus. Stevenson will likely stay under the clouds tomorrow, for gusty 12-15, and Arlington will be a little for east for the action, with models predicting 10-13.

As of right now, models are predicting 12-15 on Thursday, strongest near Hood River. Long-range forecasts tend to be rather inaccurate, but they’re currently predicting high pressure and light wind for the Memorial Day weekend. If you’re coming to the Gorge, bring your bikes and SUP boards just in case.

Random Morning Thoughts

I talk a lot about self-love, and I believe it comes from accepting all the aspects of our self. One of the things we tend to do is think of our multifaceted selves in black and white terms. For example, I like the part of me that is sweet and kind and sensitive, and I don’t like the part of me that gets depressed, annoyed, and is sensitive.

You will notice that one of those makes both the like and dislike list. That ambivalence is one of the doors into self-acceptance. When we focus our full negative attention on a part of our personality we don’t like, we create a space for self-hate. Hatred isn’t helpful.

It’s more helpful to develop, if not acceptance, understanding. If we can see why we behave in a certain way, we can develop more self-compassion. Let’s make this more concrete: say I lash out at other when I feel sad (I don’t, but it’s a common example). I can see that I do this to protect myself from being rejected if I ask for help when I’m feeling down. It’s a pre-emptive strike that negates the possibility of people turning away from me. Lashing out gives me control when I’m feeling powerless. And I can respect and appreciate my desire to protect myself. In understanding the deeper intent of my behavior, I can both accept it an work to find new strategies.

So, if there’s a part of you that you hate, see what there is to like about that part. One small step towards acceptance, one giant leap towards… well, I don’t know if it’s a giant leap, but every journey starts with a little forward movement. Have an awesome day.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

I don’t have any additional updates, so let’s go through the need-to-know stuff again: Rowena Curves are closed due to a rockslide and hill stabilization efforts. No dogs are allowed on Hospital Hill until the cattle are gone, and several trails are closed due to logging: Innerwoods, below the bench, and roads leading to Innerwoods. There’s a work party on the Pine Mont trails on Saturday.

Upcoming Events

Community events today start with a dance exercise class at the White Salmon Grange at 11am. There’s pickup touch rugby tonight at 5:45 at the Hood River Marina, and meditation at Yoga Samadhi at 6:45.

Coming up tomorrow night, there’s sailboat racing at the Hood River Marina. If you have sailing experience, show up with a six pack and someone will likely take you on their boat. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory tomorro at 5:30, and Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6.

Saturday brings a work party on the Pine Mont trails, including my personal fav, Kitchen Sink, and Sunday is the Sisters Stampede mountain bike race.

Have an awesome day today!
