Gorge Wind Forecast

Today is very different than yesterday: not-glassy, not-smoky, and not-not-windy. The 6am gradients were .10 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc). River flow at The Dalles was 132kcfs and temp was 70 degrees. A trough of low pressure is making its way eastward over the region today, high pressure of 1027mb is sitting offshore, and a weak cold front is approaching. As all these features combine, the cross-Cascade gradient will increase. That’s a lot of dynamics, and as always, that will have an impact on the wind quality, if perhaps not the strength.

The early morning wind was in the 16-20 range between Viento and Hood River (maybe Mosier too?), and the windspeed at other locations was in the single digits. By 11am, the wind should rise to 23-27 between Viento and The Dalles. Stevenson will join in, if not by 11am, by early afternoon. Models don’t think Rufus will be windy, but this does seem like the kind of setup where it would be, so let’s go with 20-24. I would expect the wind to be rangy, meaning the average will bounce around a lot. The best places for consistency today will probably be Stevenson and the Wells-Hood River stretch in the morning and the Lyle-Doug’s stretch in the afternoon. It’s also likely the stronger wind will only last a few hours near Swell before backing off in the afternoon. Whatevs. It’s going to be windy, so get out and play!

That cold front moves through tonight and early tomorrow, dragging a mass of marine clouds all the way to Hood River, with broken clouds past Hood River. Well, they aren’t broken – they’re still perfectly functional clouds, but they won’t be as solid. Anyway, The clouds will knock down the western Gorge wind tomorrow morning and increase the eastern Gorge wind. Thursday should start with 22-26 east of the low clouds, probably Mosier to Arlington, but possibly Lyle to Arlington. The sounding model suggests Hood River will clear after 11am, at which point the wind will fill in there too. At that point, we’ll have 24-28 from Swell to Arlington, with the windiest stretch Mosier to Doug’s. Stevenson’s a wild card tomorrow; everything depends on the cloud cover. 11-14 early seems fair, with a chance of 21-24 if the clouds clear.

High pressure builds in quickly on Friday, shutting down the wind. Although earlier model runs suggests we’d start with some wind and keep it, the current run suggests 7-10 early and 4-8 in the afternoon. Saturday’s forecast looks like light east flow (not windy enough to call it wind) and Sunday looks like E 15-20.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was having a conversation with a friend yesterday about thoughts. See, we tend to identify with our thoughts. They take up a lot of space in our heads, so they must be right, right? They must be who we are, right? NO!

That thought in your head right now, let’s take a moment with it. Is it bigger and more true than your body? Than the sights in front of your eyes? Than the counter-evidence available in your social network or bank account or past accomplishments or the way you treat others? Is that thought… oh, wait, it’s already gone? What does the transitory, fleeting, ephemeral nature of your thoughts say about who you are?

We tend to overidentify with our thoughts. They are loud and compelling. But they are just thoughts, and if we can learn to see them as just another part of our experience (similar to touch, taste, hearing, etc), not set-in-stone evidence of who we are, we can be free from their tyranny. It ain’t so easy to do this, but if you can learn to separate reality (this nice cool breeze on my skin, for example) from thoughts (the worry that I might get cold), you can enjoy the moment more fully.

Be good. Be well. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Looks like the smoke has returned to the Gorge. Either than or someone took Mt. Adams away; I can’t see it from my window this morning. Anyway, temps will be in the mid 50’s early (open windows!) and near 90 later (close windows). Moderate west wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks cooler with temps near 60 early and in the mid 80’s later. Moderate to strong west wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks even cooler: near 60 early and in the mid to upper 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong westerlies. No rainbows.

Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and all other SDS and Kreps lands are closed from today on through the end of fire season. That’s when “significant rain” falls and the fire danger is considered over. Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
