Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!

Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

Forecasting snow for Mt. Hood can be rather tricky, as you may have noticed. I mentioned a couple days ago that there was the potential for more snow than models were predicting, but I really didn’t think we’d see the massive snowfall we did receive. That’s something for me to look at in detail so I don’t miss it next time! Anyway, moving on to today, we’ll see continued light to moderate snowfall. The snow level will be around 2000′ all day today. Wind will be W 40 in the morning, slowly dropping to W 25 in the afternoon and turning to WSW 20 after midnight. We’ll see .3-.5” water value (WV) between this morning and 4pm, for 3-5” of good-quality new snow. We’ll see flurries and partly cloudy sky in the evening before more clouds move in after midnight.

Thursday also looks snowy after a partly cloudy start. The snow level will be 2000′ all day. Snow starts up around 4pm, with .2-.3” WV overnight giving us 2-3” of new snow. Wind on Thursday will be WSW 20 in the morning, W 35 in the afternoon, and WSW 30 after midnight.

Friday brings snow all day and heavy snow overnight. The snow level will be around 3500′ or 4000′ all day, dropping down to 1000′ or so by Saturday morning. We’ll see .4” WV between 4am and 4pm, for 4” of new snow. Very heavy snowfall overnight, 1.2” WV or so, leads to 12-16” by Saturday morning. This snow will start of dense and become progressively more powdery as the night goes on. Wind on Friday will be WSW 25 early, WSW 40 in the afternoon, and WSW 25 after midnight.

Saturday also looks snowy, but not nearly as nuts as Friday night. The heavy snowfall will taper off on Saturday morning, leaving us with a snowy day. The snow level will be around 1000′ all day. We’ll see .2-.3” WV between 4am and 4pm, for a few inches of new snow. Another .3” WV falls overnight, for a few more inches of dry powder. Wind on Saturday will be WSW 25 in the morning, slowly dropping to SW 15 in the afternoon and picking up to WSW 30 after midnight.

Sunday looks much like Saturday: snowy all day long with the snow level around 1000′. It does currently look like we’ll see another round of heavy snow Sunday night through Tuesday morning.

Random Morning Thoughts

So many of us go through the world doing things or not doing things in order to avoid hurting other people. While we can shape our behaviors and words in ways that are least likely to hurt others, mutual pain is unfortunately one of the facts of life. We can only do our best.

I’m not saying that it’s good to hurt others. It’d definitely not. But there are times when we and the other person would both be best served by having a painful conversation. In those moments, what we need to learn to do is tolerate the distress of another person.

Mutual emotional pain isn’t always a bad thing. Often it leads to greater emotional intimacy. When we contribute to the arising of pain in someone, we also have the opportunity to hold those unpleasant emotions in compassion, kindness and patience. This contributes to a stronger bond over time. Being human is pretty complicated, isn’t it? It’s okay. You’re still awesome. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

Your trainer bike will be happy to see you today. And so will your XC skis. I tried to go jogging in Post yesterday, but that didn’t work so well – there’s still a foot of snow there. I heard that Syncline is one big waterfall and stream, so please don’t mountain bike there or you’ll really do a lot of trail damage. There should be plenty of good road biking today. Go try that!

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday morning. There’s community meditation at Flow at 8:15. There’s community yoga at the FISH food bank at 10am. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5pm and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30pm. There’s a ski mountaineering race at Skibowl tomorrow night, race #1 in the series, and brought to you by the Mountain Shop.

Have an awesome day today!
