Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!

Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

It’s a mostly cloudy morning on Mt. Hood, and that’s pretty much how the day will go. Snow moves in around 7pm, continuing through Friday morning. The snow level today will be 2000′ all day, rising to 4000′ after midnight. We’ll see .3” water value (WV) tonight, for 3” of new snow. Wind today will be WSW 20-25 all morning, turning to W 25 in the evening and staying there.

Friday starts off with orographic snow flurries and a chance of a few sunbreaks. Steadier and quite heavy snowfall moves in starting around 1pm. The snow level will be 4000′ through the afternoon, dropping to around 1000′ in the evening and overnight. We’ll see trace amounts of new snow before 1pm. Between 1pm Friday and 4am Saturday, the mountain will see about 1” WV, for 12-14” of fluffy new snow. Wind on Friday will be WSW 25 early, rising to WSW 35-40 in the afternoon and evening and dropping to SW 20 after midnight.

Saturday sees continued light snowfall. The snow level will be less than 1000′ early in the morning, rising to 1500′ in the afternoon and dropping to 1000′ or less by Sunday morning. Approximately .2” WV will fall between 4am and 4pm, for 2-3” of additional powder. Another .4-.5” falls overnight, for 4-5” of additional light and fluffy snow. Wind on Saturday will be SW 20 in the morning, SW 30 in the afternoon, and WSW 30 after midnight.

Sunday looks cold and snowy. The snow level will be less than 500′ in the morning and 1000′ during the day, dropping back to 500′ or so after midnight. It’s a little tricky forecasting snow amounts for Sunday, and especially for Sunday night, as we’re heading in to a NW flow pattern. In that pattern, snow amounts (as we saw earlier this week) tend to outpace model predictions. Anyway, expect a couple inches of new snow during the day Sunday followed by 3-5” Sunday night. Wind will be WSW 20 early, W 20 in the afternoon, and WNW 30 overnight.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light west wind this morning picks up to W 13-16 this afternoon through the entire Gorge. You can expect light wind all day Friday. Saturday looks like W 5-10 in the morning and E 10-15 in the afternoon. Sunday looks like light westerlies early and W 10-13 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

So many of us go through the world doing things or not doing things in order to avoid hurting other people. While we can shape our behaviors and words in ways that are least likely to hurt others, mutual pain is unfortunately one of the facts of life. We can only do our best.

I’m not saying that it’s good to hurt others. It’d definitely not. But there are times when we and the other person would both be best served by having a painful conversation. In those moments, what we need to learn to do is tolerate the distress of another person.

Mutual emotional pain isn’t always a bad thing. Often it leads to greater emotional intimacy. When we contribute to the arising of pain in someone, we also have the opportunity to hold those unpleasant emotions in compassion, kindness and patience. This contributes to a stronger bond over time. Being human is pretty complicated, isn’t it? It’s okay. You’re still awesome. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

The Nothing is out this morning, and above it is partly to mostly cloudy sky. That’s the forecast for today: mostly cloudy. Sprinkles and light rain move in around 5pm. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the mid 40’s this afternoon. Light wind. 17% chance of rainbows. Friday looks like Nothing to start with rain after 10am, continuing through Saturday. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the mid to upper 40’s in the afternoon. Calm wind. 39% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks partly to mostly cloudy with sprinkles that end after 3pm. The snow level will be 1000′ early and 1500′ in the afternoon, meaning some wet snowflakes could mix in. Light west wind. 97% chance of rainbows, especially after noon. Sunday brings light snow flurries and/or sprinkles early with partly cloudy sky in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and low 40’s in the afternoon. White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

I went for a run at Syncline yesterday morning, and was pleasantly surprised to see perfect dirt on Moab, Maui, and the doubletrack. If you want it, get it right now before the rain arrives tomorrow. You’ll also spot a couple of grass widows if you keep your eyes open. In other news… apparently the lower trails at Sandy have been rideable recently, but we are looking at a snow level of 1000′ this weekend, so that might not be the case soon. Road biking has been good lately – you can avoid the gravel by… going around it!

Upcoming Events

There’s a community dance-exercise class at 11am at the White Salmon Grange. There’s community yoga tonight at 6pm at Samadhi, Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30, and Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6:30. Coming up Friday morning, it’s the Kickstand Coffee Run. A 4 mile jog at 7am gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. Healthy. Very healthy. There’s also a ski mountaineering race tonight at Skibowl.

Have an awesome day today!
