Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Tuesday morning, and we’re entering a very active period of weather starting this afternoon. This will impact wind quality and predictability. For today, Tuesday, we started the day with light and variable wind under a .06 (pdx-dls) and .09 (dls-psc) gradient. As a weather system approaches, the wind will pick up. We should see a period of 19-23 from Stevenson to Mosier until the rain starts in the western Gorge. After that, the wind will likely drop to 11-14. Further east, we’ll see the wind pick up to 19-23 by midday, and then rise further to gusty 25-29 from Avery to Arlington mid-afternoon.

Wednesday looks like a light west wind day, 10mph or less. It will also be raining on Wednesday. Thursday looks very rainy. Models are predicting inconsistent west wind at 10-13 on Thursday. The next chance for significant westerlies is on Friday as a weather system moves through. The GFS currently predicts 24-28 Friday afternoon east of The Dalles.

One thing to keep in mind this week is the dynamic nature of our current weather setup. A small difference in initial conditions will lead to large changes in the forecast two or three days out. That said, it sure does look rainy this week!

Random Morning Thoughts

I couldn’t think of anything to write here this morning, so I decided to get in the shower and think about it. As soon as I stepped into the shower, I realized that I had neglected to disrobe entirely. While there isn’t any profound takeaway in this (other than perhaps how important it is to be in the present moment), hopefully you got a laugh out of the story. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but could be if you come to Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

This is just a quick forecast. We’ll see precipitation all week in the mountain. The snow level on Tuesday and Wednesday will be 10,000′. On Thursday, the snow level will drop from 10,000′ to 6000′ during the day, and 5000′ in the evening and overnight. This will result in 3” of new snow above 5000′. The snow level Friday will be around 4000′, with flucutations of 500′ either way during the day. Another 7” of snow will fall above 5000′. While that all sounds lovely, an atmospheric river takes aim at the Northwest on Saturday. The snow level will rise from 4000′ to 10,000′, with 4-6” of RAIN in the mountains during the day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We’re starting off clear today, but the sky will go cloudy later and we might see some light sprinkles. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong westerlies. 14% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks cloudy with light rain possible at all hours of the day. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 28% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks rainier than rainy Wednesday with a chance of dry weather after 5pm. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. 87% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Just a reminder that many of the trails above 8-Track in Post Canyon are closed. There will be heavy equipment in the closed areas over the next few weeks, so please stay out. In addition, it’s been snowing and sticking above 3500′ or so. Trails south of the 44 Road are likely to be snowy, as well as St. Helens, Huffman, and anything else up high. Whoopdee, Hospital Hill and Syncline are PERFECT right now.

Upcoming Events

There are all sorts of events happening as part of Gorge Happiness Month, more than I care to type out. There’s pickup touch rugby tonight at 5:45 at the Hood River Marina and meditation with the monks from Pacific Hermitage at Yoga Samadhi at 6:45.

Have an awesome day today!
