Gorge Wind Forecast

We’re going to be in what they call a “progressive” weather pattern for the next several days. That will make the wind unreliable, gusty, and also very, very wet. For Thrusday, we’ll have light west wind all day. Friday starts with west 7-10 through the whole Gorge. We may see a bump to gusty 11-14 from Stevenson to Rowena, but the strongest wind will be further east on Friday. You can expect (hope for, perhaps), 19-23 in the afternoon east of The Dalles, all the way to Arlington.

A very, very wet system moves in on Saturday. It currently looks like we’ll see a period of drenchingly damp easterlies at 15-20 in the morning. The far western Gorge, near Multnomah Falls, will see west wind at 15-20 late in the day. The far east Gorge (Arlington eastward) may also see gusty 15-20 late in the day. Sunday also looks very, very rainy. The far west Gorge will continue to see westerlies in the 15-20 range. The central Gorge will probably be calm. The far east Gorge may see gusty, rainy 18-22. In other words, we’re looking at low-quality wind for the next several days. Next chance for strong, steady wind is Tuesday, when models are suggesting 30-40mph east wind.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m copying this thought from my Facebook page in response to the “me too” campaign which, btw, was actually started 10 years ago by a Tarana Burke, a Black woman.

Women, this is difficult to hear, but we have played a part in normalizing sexual harassment. Here are ways I have contributed, and I hope you will think about the ways in which you have contributed…

When men made comments about my body, I ignored them, I thanked them, I felt flattered, or I made crude comments back. I did not say “no”. I did not protest. I used sexual comments to put male coworkers back in their place. I participated in “Sexual Harassment Sunday” at a workplace, joining in on butt smacking. I have referred to my own body in a derogatory way, normalizing the unwanted comments others make. In intimate situations, I haven’t said “no” when someone went further than I was comfortable with.

Last year I was riding my bike down the street in Portland when a man (walking with his girlfriend), yelled “boobies” at me. I turned around and went up to him. “That wasn’t okay,” I said. He looked offended. His girlfriend looked mortified. Maybe he won’t do it again. It felt scary to do this. It also felt good. I hope I can consistently say, “that’s not okay” in the future.

None of us deserves to be harrassed, molested, groped, or raped. But when we endure the small violations in silence, we contribute to a culture where small and big violations are okay and more likely to happen. How have you (people of all genders) contributed? How will you react the next time you experience harassment? I encourage all people, men, women, and people who have other gender identities, to share your contributions to this problem publicly. Take responsibility, and commit to doing better going forward. That would be awesome. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but could be if you come to Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood Snow forecast is slowly growing in complexity as I get motivated to include more information. We’ll see snow for Thursday. The snow level will be 7000′ this morning and 5000′ this evening. While rain will fall during the day, we’ll see about 4-6” of new snow tonight above 5000′. Friday looks snowy. The snow level will be 4000′ early and 3000′ in the afternoon and overnight. About 8” of new snow will fall during the day. Another inch or two will fall overnight. The snow level will risse from 3000′ Saturday morning to 10,000′ on Saturday afternoon, remaining there for the foreseeable future. The latest run of the GFS says 6” of rain will fall on Mt. Hood on Saturday and another 4” on Sunday. Whoa.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We’re looking at a very wet stretch of weather through Sunday, followed by the potential for dry weather early next week. Thursday will be in the mid 50’s in the morning and upper 50’s in the afternoon. Rain. Light west wind. 12% chance of rainbows. Friday looks rainy during the day and showery in the late afternoon and evening. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and mid 50’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks super f’ing wet. Temps will be near 40 early and in the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 4% chance of rainbows. Sunday currently looks soaking wet too.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Just a reminder that many of the trails above 8-Track in Post Canyon are closed. There will be heavy equipment in the closed areas over the next few weeks, so please stay out. It’s going to rain so hard that it will be too muddy to ride anyway, anywhere. In addition, it’s been snowing and sticking above 3500′ or so. Trails south of the 44 Road are likely to be snowy, as well as St. Helens, Huffman, and anything else up high. Your trainer bike will enjoy your company for the next four days.

Upcoming Events

There are all sorts of events happening as part of Gorge Happiness Month, more than I care to type out. There’s Tai Chi today (Thursday) at 2:30pm at the Hood River Adult Center ($5) and at Our Savior Church in Bingen (free). There’s community yoga at 6pm at Samadhi in White Salmon. The CGWA awards and a free Windsurfing movie are at Andrew’s tonight from 6pm to 9pm. The Kickstand Coffee Run is tomorrow at 7am (free coffee and donut for jogging 4 miles). There are two trail work parties on Saturday: Pine Mont Loop Trail at 9am (Hood River County) and Golden Eagle Park (HRATS) at 9:30am.

Have an awesome day today!
